  • Quick rear end gear question

I just wanted to know if stock GM 3.42 gears would work in my car. I'm not sure what year of f-body they're from (I'm thinking an LS1), but I don't think that matters though.

I have a 95 t/a with stock 2.73's right now. I know I would need to reflash my computer for speedo purposes, but I can do that myself. I eventually want to get numerically higher gears, but for now and for the $$$, 3.42's would be nicer than my 2.73's.

    Thanks everyone
    Chris

I think you would come out at the same money if you just bought an entire 3.42 rearend. By the time you get the gears, get them pulled, and the new ones installed correctly, you'd probably be talking the same or more than an entire stock 3.42 rearend would cost you. Eventually you'll want to go to a 12 bolt, so don't sink a bunch of money in the stock rearend.

They would not work because you have a 2 series carrier gear. You need to get a 3 series carrier gear when you switch them. Several aftermarket companies make the 3.42 3.73 etc gear ratios with the thicker carrier gear.

      Hope this helps

Plus his stock 2.73'S are sitting in a 2-series carrier. Stock GM 3.42's will require a 3-series.

          Thanks guys.

Swapping the gears wouldn't be a problem. My buddy is a tech at a gm dealership, has gone through school, and has done the gears on his car before....so labor would have been free....well maybe a case of beer.

I know if the rear end sizes were different it wouldn't work, but I just wasn't sure on the carrier.

Thanks guys, appreciate it as always
