Ok, so I was playing Gran Tourismo 3 on PS2 and I was wondering, what is that main benefit from putting a light weight flywheel on a car? I mean, I realize that it makes the engine rev freer, but does it also put more power to the ground? Just curious.

Flywheels.....just curious...

In road racing, the lightweight flywheel will allow the engine to rev faster which equates to faster acceleration out of a corner. It also alows the engine to ...ummm... un-rev (? ) faster which helps with faster gear changes & matching of engine RPM to drivetrain RPM.
On a drag car, a lighter flywheel is not always best. Depending on the engine's torque & the vehicle's dynamics (such as weight), you may WANT the rotational mass of the flywheel to help keep the engine from bogging at launch or gear changes.
