  • crankshaft balancer?

ive been having a weird squeling/whistling noise coming from my car, and im almost positive its come from the crankshaft. I took off the belts, so i know its of the other pulleys. I was told it could be the balancer is loose, or i could of "spun" it. Any ideas how to fix this problem? its been going on for some time. thanks alot for any help

If it's the balaner...and it's loose, you better replace it quick!

If that thing comes apart at 5000+ RPM , you're going to have a
nice hole through your hood or maybe worse!

Simple. Remove the belt, undo 3 bolts and remove with a 3 bolt puller. Should take all of 15 minutes.

The damper (not balancer) is made of two parts. An inner ring that bolts to the hub, and an outer ring bonded to the inner ring. If the bonding breaks down, you could "spin" the outer portion. Check to see if that is happening by firmly grasping the outer portion and see if there is any play. The hub is pressed onto the crank and is held tight by a center bolt, doubtful that had moved. The question here is that I've never heard a damper or balancer make a whistle. Usually it is a rumble due to a now out of balance condition, or a loose damper.

ive heard from a bunch of different people it could be the balancer...im just kinda hesitant because i dont know exactly what im gonna find or have to replace... They say it might be the waterpump..but im also positive the sound isnt coming that far up..and my temperatures have been fine..

Think about it for a minute...... What could possibly make the damper whine, squeal or whistle? There are no moving parts, only the crank seal exerting slight pressure on the hub. Something could be contacting the rotating mass. Now the timing chain directly behind the cover has some mechanical motion happening there as well. Ditto for the crank bearings

The water pump however, is shaft driven and the bearing could be going south. There is mechanical motion there too. The noise can be transmitted to anywhere in the engine bay. A simple mechanic's stethescope could shed some light here. One time I thought my transmission had a bearing going out, turns out the rear end's pinion bearing was going away and the aluminum driveshaft was transmitting the sound from the rear end up to the transmission. A stethescope cleared that up.
