  • NFB: WOOHOO!! Wireless broadband on my laptop!

My wife uses her laptop to do her online college classes, and she's been using an Aircard, which basically uses cell phone technology to access the internet. While it worked fine, it was sloooooow!! About the equivalent of 9600 baud dial up modem. We just bought a Linksys Wireless-G Router and Network Adaptor card, and WOW! am I impressed! I just got done installing and the thing flies now! Just like the broadband on the desktop computer.

I have to say, I'm not a very tech oriented guy... I know my way around the cables of a computer, but when it comes to programming and networking, and configuring things, I'm usually lost. The Linksys was extremely easy to install, I had it up and running about 15 minutes after taking it out of the box. Instructions were very clear for even the most newbie novice... easy step by step instructions on screen.

Range isn't as great as I had been expecting, but we've got pretty thick walls in this house. I bought this particular brand for the combination of price and reputation, and it had a lot better reviews than some of it's competitors. I reccomend it!

I've had the same router for about 6 months now and I haven't had any issues with it. I replaced my Linksys 10/100 router with the wireless-G router. My work computer and my wife's work computer have wireless cards built in. They work fine with the Linksys router. My daughter had a Mac laptop that she would bring home from school and that worked fine also. I agree with the distance issue, but you can buy high gain antennas that should help.

    Good Luck with it..

Some tips on securing your wireless

1- Change the default SSID from "Linksys" to something else
2- Change the default password on the router
            3- Disable SSID broadcast

            Even more secure
4- Enable MAC Address filtering (you will need to add the MAC address of the laptop wireless card & the router's radio MAC address)

The first 3 should be considered mandatory.

I just re-certified my wireless cert in January...
