  • NFB, oil pressure

I have a 91 gmc jimmy that i drive when not in the Camaro. The oil pressure gauge is all over the place, it barely ever has a steady reading. Any idea on what could cause this. Is it something i should be concerned about or is it just the gauge. The truck runs fine.

    Ken,

If it's just bouncing around... you've got a poor electrical connection somewhere. Could be at the sender or someplace else...OR ... a bad sender or gauge.

If it's going up & down as the engine RPM goes up & down (but maybe more than you're used to with the Camaro...), that's OK.

I own a 91 GMC Jimmy myself I have the dreaded digital guages though. This is the skinny...it will vary pretty good with RPMS...RPM up it goes up RPM down it goes down. When it gets wacky as you describe it one of a couple things. I will list them in order of likelihood.

Sender: The sender is on the back of the block near the firewall...assuming you have a 4.3 engine... if you don't then I'm not sure where its at. These are know to go and anyone who pulls an entgine out of these things always replaces it just out of habit since its hard to get to otherwise.

electrical short: As Gordon said...the truck is older and its quite possible you have a rubbed wire somewhere...not to to hard to track down as there is little wire between the guage and the sender.

Guage: Firstly if you have the digi guages like me... its possible the short is in the cluster itself and it might be worth it to get some standard guages to verify you digi's work. There is a guy in Canada who rebuilds the digis for about 126 bucks US but you are without a cluster for a couple weeks. If you have standard needled guages its not to hard to find a junked S-10 and hook up another one.
