  • NFB - Anyone with a GM 4.8 V8

I'm looking at a new truck to replace my S10 and I found a deal on a GMC extended cab 4wd SLE that has the 4.8 V8. I'm looking for advice to see if people think it's under powered. I drove the 4.8 and the new aluminum 5.3 V8 and they both have plenty of power, but what happens if you put a small/mid size trailer behind it? Also, what kind of gas mileage do you get?

    Thanks Gary

I have a 2001 GMC Sierra SLE with a 4.8 v8 and I must say, that I am not disappointed at all. I use this truck everyday as my work truck since I am a builder and the truck hauls without any problem. I've carried full skids of granite tiles, bricks, and cement bags(80lb bags) without any problems. The truck is basically a work horse. Hope this helps. Good luck!!

My 2001 Silverado 1500 Extended Cab has the 4.8L V8, 3.73 posi rear and the towing package. It is up to towing my Formula (3,635#) on a 15-ft open trailer. I think if I was towing it in steep mountains I'd prefer a larger engine, but its rated 7,000# with the 3.73 and the A4. The "Tow/Haul" programming on the tranny is very good.

I have bigger concerns about the brakes than the engine. They just don't inspire a lot of confidence, even with the electric trailer brakes properly adjusted.

The 4WD will reduce your towing capacity a bit, as will smaller gears. I see anywhere from 15mpg in all city driving to 22mpg on the freeway. When towing it will drop below 15mpg.
