  • 2005 JD Power Vehicle Dependability Study

I remember someone on here balking about GM long term quality. Well here it is. This is how the 2002 models and brands stacked up after 3 years.

    http://www.jdpower.com/news/releases/vds2005089.asp

Together GM and Ford kicked butt in car and truck segments with their models earning almost all the highest rankings. And it looks like Camaro earned a 2nd place in the sporty car category above the toyota MR2. 2 Buick models ranked higher than Avalon! Malibu and Alero earned top honors in Midsize. And even the lowly Chevy Prizm beat out the Toyota Echo and Prius.

Overall, Toyo-Honda ranked below Lincoln, Buick, and Cadillac and basically tied with Mercury.

    Not bad...Not bad at all...

I'd be curious to see numbers for 5, 7, and 10 years. Regardless, for the 3 year scenario, that's not bad.

Unfortunately, the damage is done. It will take them awhile to dig themselves out of the hole.

Here is the record among my family and friends.

Friend; '98 Blazer; Transmission failure at two years old; dealer replaced transmission
Friend; '00 Park Avenue; Climate control failure at 1 year old; replaced parts...still acted up...friend got rid of car because of no heat in the winter
Parent; '99 Park Avenue; Climate control failure and random stalling at one year old; replaced climate control...still acted up... dealer never solved stalling problem...parent got rid of car.
Parent; '03 Envoy; Transfer case failure at 1 year old; working with dealer
Me; '00 Bonneville SSEI; Bad steering intermediate shaft, bad TCC valve, bad heated seat solenoid, interior rattles. I am just for the lake to form in my trunk as it does with most of these cars.
Neighbor; '04 S-10 Pickup; lifting paint and mechanical - don't know the specifics - owner said won't buy another GM
Neighbor; '02 Le Sabre; mechanical - don't know the specifics - owner said won't buy another GM

The quality may be better in the last couple of years, but this is a pretty bad track record among my circle of friends and family.

      '97 T/A: (SLP 1LE Suspension, SB, & sfc(s), Loudmouth); 4.10s; B&M Ripper; R/A Hood; ZR1s
My daily drivers: '06 Jeep Liberty CRD (wife); '01 Yukon Denali XL (me); '03 Stratus Coupe (me)
