  • Heads question

I have a friend that has a 95 Z28 and a guy he knows told him that for a $1000 he would port and polish his heads and a few other things(he cant remember what else was said) and this would give him and extra 200hp--he would even prove it on a dyno--im trying to figure out how he would do this unless he is talking about a cam and atleast a few other things while he is in there---am i wrong? is there some particular questions i should have him ask this guy to make sure he's not full of it??

    Thanks

i am almost positive you will NOT see those kinds of gains from head porting alone. That car would need headers (full exhaust), valve job, fully ported, and an aggressive cam to pull those kinds of numbers.

You'd have to have at least a cam, bigger injectors, bigger throttle body, valve springs, headers and a good tune to go with it.

thats basically what i was thinking--a minimum of springs and valves and a large cam-plus much more little things-

When monkeys fly out his butt. It's gonna take major work to coax 200 hp out of an LT-1 without a power adder. It would take a great set of heads and not a backyard port job, cam, intake, headers, exhaust, dyno tune and more. Not only that, the powerband would be shifted much higher than stock unless it's a stroker with a serious increase in displacement. Adding 200 HP is going to cost some serious dough, no way it's going to happen for a grand.

Agreed. I think a more accurate number for a really good port and polish would be 20 hp, or 200/10

This is a pretty good website showing what can be done with an LT1 heads & cam package, and it lists what is needed to support that package. His claims seem to be backed up by independant dyno tests of cars with the packages installed. Interesting, because it gives you a relative cost for each power level, and what it takes to support it. I think these are some of the less expensive packages that have shown these results.

              http://www.eportworks.com/Products.htm

              LE1 heads/cam - $1,100 - 370-390rwHP
              LE2 heads/cam - $1,650 - 400-420rwHP
              LE3 heads/cam - $1,850 - 410-420rwHP

If you think in terms of a stock LT1 + 200flywheel HP = 485 flywheeHP it would appear that you are in the ballpark with the LE3 setup. But look carefully at the required supporting parts.

I am wanting to hear peoples reviews and results of the LE1 and the LE2 combos. I have been searching but cant find any real information. I am considering one of these packages in the future cause those gains are impressive.

You need to go to the more active F-Body bulletin boards.... 2 examples of which are:

                  http://web.camaross.com/forums/index.php?
                  http://www.fbody.com/cgi-bin/lt1/postform.cgi

There are frequent discussions on CZ28.com, and I've seen a post recently on fbody.com with some results.
