BFGoodrich brand launches ‘Mustang Mania’ dealer contest
    Tire Business staff report©

GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 29, 2005) — Michelin North America Inc.’s BFGoodrich brand is running a “Mustang Mania” promotion for tire dealers.

In the promotion, BFGoodrich dealers will have the chance to win a 2006 Roush Stage 3 Ford Mustang. The contest, which runs from July 1 to Aug. 31, is aimed at dealers selling BFGoodrich’s ultra-high performance g-Force T/A tire line.

For each g-Force T/A the dealer sells, the person making the sale will receive one chance to win the Mustang. The salesperson fills out a form that will be distributed by Michelin for each entry. A winner will be chosen at random after the contest’s close, a spokesman said.

To participate, dealers must have a current authorized dealer agreement signed with Michelin Americas Small Tires for BFGoodrich products. The program is open to salespeople at eligible dealerships only.

Michelin said it also will award other prizes, ranging from gift cards to cash.

Ken, I've got a question for you that I've wondered about for some time... you may or may not be able to answer it for me....

These authorized tire centers... places that are "authorized" to sell certain brands by the manufacturers.... often I've gone to them to see if they'd match a tire price that I've gotten from tire rack, and they'll tell me "that's cheaper than I can get it for"..... If I were to open a tire store and et my stock from tire rack rather than the manufacturers and essentially be an "unauthorized" tire dealer.... could they do anything? Attempt to shut me down, take legal action, etc...? Or would they just ignore me and not provide any factory assistance? Theoretically, could I open a store like this? Or say a performance shop that gets most of it's business doing modifications, wants to sell some high-performance tires too, could they just go to tirerack to get their stock?

its kind of a weird set up and Im not all the keen on the details. I know, that on several occassion, I approached Discount Tire, Merchants, and a Goodyear Store, and showed them the Tire Rack price, and said "if you match this price plus the 8 dollar a tire shipping cost, ill buy them from you".... both Discount Tire and Merchants said ok...Goodyear didnt. now....merchants is a multi brand tire store, as is Discount tire...where as Goodyear is not...and even though there are two types of goodyear stores: company owned and independent owned, it didnt seem to matter. as you know, warranty issues and defects would come into play...rembersement from the manuf. would not exist in your scenerio you describe...and... if some legal stuff came up..like the tire failed and somebody crashed... you might end up getted sued instead of the manuf., who will claim "they are not an 'authorized' distributor of our tire".......

you've got my curiousity up now...ill make some phone calls today or one day next week and get some details..

The only real reason I ask is that I've often kicked around the idea of a performance shop, and if it ever came to fruition, I'd want to sell rims and tires too. Plus my own curiosity about the issue. Perhaps you could somehow become a tirerack "authorized" retailer, with them providing some type of support and backing in the legal and warranty arena, plus a volume discount for even lower prices.

Just wondering... if you find out, that'd be awsome.
