  • Need a lot of help with replacement engine

I picked up my replacement engine for my car today (supposedly out of a 94 camaro with 40,000 miles on it. I picked it up for $1,100 and it has a 1 month 1000 mile warantey so I thought that wasn't to bad of deal. First thing I noticed about it though was the opti spark was vented. I talked to the guy about it and he swore up and down it was a 94 so I figured the person who had it may have replaced the non vented with a vented, the car also has a set of coated edelbrock mid tube headers, and the valve covers are not stock. The heads also looked odd to me. I'm not sure what it is maybe wishful thinking but they do not look like the ones on my engine. I had the guy run the vin and it showed up as a 94. My questions are.

1.If it is a 95 or newer can I still put it in and use my PCM. The engine did not come with one.
2.Is there anything else that will need changed?
3.Can someone run a carfax for me or atleast decifer the vin for me, I'd like to know every possible thing about this motor. The vin is 2G1FT22PXR2202697.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Also I need to get this done as quickly as possible my warantey starts today how about we have a big fbody meet at my place this weekend and get my car running again, FREE BEER .

202697 - the 2,697th Camaro built in 1994 or 102,697... I thought they started with 100001 for the Camaros and 200001 for the Pontiacs.

What is "vented" on the Opti? If its just the cap, its a replacment cap. If its the cap and the body (vacuum nipples on each) its a vented Opti. It takes a few other changes to put a vented Opti on a 94, including a new timing cover (95), timing set, cam and harness connector.

Did you get the vin over the phone or did he read it to you? P and T sound really simular over the phone.

I put a '96 in my '94 z. Everything bolts up the same, but we used the wiring harness off the '94 so we did not have to mess with the PCM or anything else. Ended up with a sensor here or there without wire going to it.

I probably did confuse the two letters when he said them and thats where I got the T from. I'm not sure if the cap and rotor are vented or the entire opti is. I'm going to put a new oil pump in it tonight and rip down the front of the engine to find out if its been converted to a vented opti or just had a new cap and rotor installed. Since it is a 94 though all of the connectors should just match right up shouldn't they?

94s and 95s are mostly identical as far as wiring. If it truly has a vented opti, you will need the short harness from the opti to up the connection by the intake manifold, as it it different. Otherwise, I don't see any problems.
