  • hypertech programmer ?

how much horsepower can you squeeze out of an lt1 with the hypertech programmer and is worth the cost of the unit?

its a decent programmer if you want to be hands on and just want to change the basics, like wider tires, firmer shifts (auto), different rear end. it claims 22 HP gains.

(selling one by the way on the fs/ft forum. Take a look at it)

A Hypertech programmer is perfect for changing tire size, gear ratios, fan temps, rev limiter and shift points. However, if you're looking for horsepower, from what I've seen, it's not worth it. If you have a laptop (or even desktop you can put in the garage) and a cable, you can get a mail order tune from PCMforless, or madZ28. Both are awesome, and I have PCMforless...Bryan is great. Unlimited programming for the rest of the cars life costs around $75-$90.

Useful for the gear ratio changes, tire size, eliminating speed limter, raising rev limit, shift points, etc. I tried the "power programming" on my 94 Formula when it was almost stock (CAI, catback, U/D pullies) and was not able to measure any performance gains at all. That was done using a Vericom Performance computer (like a g-Tech, but it actually works).

I saw a magazine test where they installed the power programming on a basically stock 96 LT1. It LOST 5HP. They then installed the 160degF t'stat and changed the fan on/off temps, and they saw 10+ HP gain. Without the t'stat swap, you will not see any gains.

The best alternative.... a "mail-order" tune from one of two or three sources that we can point you to. Guaranteed 15HP on a stock setup, even more on a modified engine. Low cost updates when you do future mods, ability to "turn off" diagnostics for mods that cause unwanted SES lights, many more things available.

I would not recommend the Hypertech unless you get it used for 1/2-price and plan to use it only for the gear ratio changes, etc.

Hey does anyone know if there are programs like the laptop one described above for the third gen T/A's? I haven't had much luck searching for one.

The only thing I have noticed is the engine runs cooler and the rev limiter is raised a few hundered. Bout all. Go to pcmforless.com

Are you sure PCMFORLESS has lifetime updates for around a $100 or so, I dont see it on the site. I have the OBD1 with the OBD2 connector. That sounds like a very good deal. Also is it true that if I have a laptop and a cable all they do is email you the programming.
                  Thanks

Check with them to see at what level they offer long-term updates and whether there is any charge.

Each place is different, but some will send you a replacement PCM with the program in it, for a core charge, returned when you return your old PCM. No down time that way. Its also possible for some to send you the program so you can load it with a laptop, but you need to see what software you need to do that.

                      For PCMforless, go here: http://www.pcmforless.com/index.php?...d=21&Itemid=43
Then scroll to the bottom and you'll see: " 1994 and 1995 "Load your self" $50 if you purchase a loading cable from http://www.akmcables.com/ and load the program yourself. More details on this service are at the FAQ page."
Just below that is: "Add $25 for unlimited updates for new modifications with the email package."

They email you the software to load it, however, it only works in DOS mode. So make sure you can boot up correctly in DOS.
