  • 4.10s and LSd finally installed :)

they're great, no whine, just fast and a speedo that reads way too fast , lol. The only problem happened when we didnt have the pin for the torsen diff but we just used to one from the open diff, it moves around but doesnt interrupt anything and only makes a little ping when you are driving slow. I think the whole gear install thing is overrated in difficulty because we pretty much just threw em in and adjusted them a little so that it would turn Every gear pulls so much harder i love it and the posi makes to car so much sterdy'er i reccomend them to all. Need to get a tune or something to fix the speedo so my odometer doesnt get too far off :-/ Car is so much fun to drive now, i love it.

Im still really on the fence about putting the 4.10's in my Z28. Im mostly stock but many (who are more knowledgeable than me) have said it would be a bad idea and not provide any gains with a mostly stock motor. I still dont completely understand that, my thinking is that all gears will pull harder than with the 3.42's and there would have to be a gain of some kind. Some say that the topend speed will be gone but my 120MPH days are behind me.
I really want to lose that dead power area around 1500 - 2500 RPM. Right now if you just ease out without spinning tires and floor I can pack a lunch before the power kicks in
I am wanting to do heads, cam and headers in the future but who knows.
If anyone has comments on stock LT's that swapped from 3.42's to the 4.10 please post your results and comments.
      Thanks

In my opinion, I wouldn't have gone with 4:10s on a V6. 3.42 has been shown to provide the best acceleration all the way to top speed. With 4:10s, you gained off the line, but at speed you'll see a loss as there isn't enough HP to pull that gear in the upper gears and speed.

With V8s, a 3.73 is for automatics... or stick cars with a power adder such as nitrous, turbo or supercharger. For normally aspirated 6 speeds, go with 4:10.

I put 4.10's in the Formula, and love 'em......totally different car, very quick off the mark......you will lose some top end, but I have no need to take the Formula to those speeds.....

Did you at least use a dial indicator?

You can throw an engine together just the same, but if your bearing clearances, etc... aren't right, it's a ticking time bomb. I hope it lasts for you man, but people don't just do things for the hell of it...

I put 373's in the 94 police pkg camaro that i once owned with an lt-1 and 50 shot nitrous wet and had traction problems all the way up to 100 yards before 1/8th run and i'd end up with 8.8's but that was with stock radials too

Its not rocket science, but the gears have to mesh properly and the bearings have to have the correct preload in order for it to survive. You should mark the teeth with marking compound and make sure they are tracking right, measure your backlash with an indicator and torque the pinion so you dont chew up the bearings. They may turn great when you install them, but there are tolerances for a reason.....the gears shrink and swell with temperature and wear....couple that with the fact that an engine is turning the gears, not your hand.....

Hopefully it lasts for you, but I would want the assurance of the measurements being correct. Just my $.02

i did my gear install myself and used the white markiing grease to insure proper alignment on the 94 camaro lt-1 i once owned--i installed gears that were more square cut then the conical or more rounded at the tips of the gears and it did fine---i had a little whine when i let off the gas-- when i gave it the gas---took it to a shop to let them mesh the gears properly before you wear them to much to be re-aligned at it still did the same thing after i got it back---i think the guy only charged me $60 bucks to do the gear alignment so it was worth it---although i don't think he did much better--i sure felt better about it---hardest thing about my gear install was the pesky abs ring on the outside of the larger gear--took it down to a shop to have it pressed on and they broke it and i had to buy another for $20 bucks and they got it right the 2nd time---i shoulda made them pay for it----oh well

Yeah, we measured a few things out (the important ones :-p) but it didnt take much. As for the thing about the LT1 with 4.10s, I'd do it if I were you. You'd still be able to get it to 120mph easy, if not much quicker. My speedo is off so my speed limiter is off too making me onl;y able to get up to around 89ish but damn it gets there FAST. I don't get it up over 100mph much so the top end for my driving is still there.

If a stock LT1's top speed really is 150-155MPH like i've heard, just out of curiousity, what would my M6's top speed drop down to?

                        I will go 411's when I get a strange 12-bolt. 410's + 10-bolt + BFG DR's + drag strip + my crappy driving = boom (wheel-hop on burnout) . (about $2700 to do it right )

as far as top speed, I assume people try the top speed in 5th gear as with the stock gear ratio, 5th gear was around 130mph. 410's are like having shifted everything one gear lower. With 410's, 6th gear could possibly be more useable and go to redline at a much higher gear than previosly (not creeping to a max 130 in 6th with 342's) ... could lead credence to what I have been told by owners that the actual top speed does not decrease, as people are mistaken, with the presumtion that 5th gear is always the tope end gear (as it was with stock 342's/323's)... a change of gears requires a change in thinking (6th gear is now steeper and can accelerate )
