GA has that going on. It's basically the same thing. 7 months after initially receieving your license, you can't drive anyone under the age of 18 and you can't drive past midnight until like 5 or 6. It's kinda gay cuz if your going down the road with your girlfriend and she's under 18, unless a cop is ex-CIA, their not going to be able to tell your ages. Must be important to the state if they went throught the headache of passing the bill. We've only had it for like a year so we will see if the statistics says it pays off. (Doubt It)

I think if they catch any of those kids with the phone in their ear, they should yank the license for 6 months and get them out of the habit ASAP. I also think testing driving skills of elderly people is not out of line and women in the big 7000# SUVs should have to prove they can park them at a crowded grocery store before they get to take one on the road.

Cell phone rant: This girl in the grocery store walks up to the hamburger with her cart blocking the aisle and the meat and gets out the phone to call mom. She can't buy hamburger without a consultation. Me and one other person is for her to get done and finally she hangs up the phone and pushes her cart straight into me. Anyway I was about out of patience at that time so I gave it a shove in another direction and told her to get the _ out of the way. I swear, you take these phones away, and half of the population is going to be wandering around like mindless zombies not being able to make a decision End Rant

well personally im not gonna say im the most mature person on here cause im def not im almost 17 but i try to keep as well in line with people in the car and im not dumb and drive fast in traffice and hot rod adn all that i mean when im alone in my car the highway is wide open i might let her run a little more free considering that there are less variables in that area i also dont really talk on the cell phone that much nemore

i did bottom out my car hardcore the other night though totally forgot about the dip at the bottom of a hill and then it pops right back up and i was going about 20 and the light turned yellow and didnt want to slam the brakes down and have someone hit me or have someone in the car hit their head on the dash so i knew i wouldn't be caught at red id be through by the time it was done being yellow and i kept going at 20 which is the speed limit but totally forgot how bad it dips my car came down and now theres like 3 scratches on the metal plate under the front axle other then that no dmg done i checked it out down the road and realized how dumb it was learned that lesson the hard way

but i must say i see many kids hot rodding in teh rain and stuff which makes me mad my girlfriend has this thing where she thinks she can handle driving backroads in the rain ..... the less she doesnt like to drive nemore because i gave her the biggest pep talk of her life and have done to about ummm 20 people now lol every1 makes me drive by myself casue i cant stand when people drive like dicks

Agreed. You can almost always tell who recentley got their license... Especially in your town, 88Bird. I don't know what it is about that town, but it seems every newly licensed kid wants to race me when I go to my Brother's house. It doesn't even matter what they are driving. They see a fast looking car and assume I'll want to race their '93 Toyota Tercel.

I'm going to step out on a limb and disagree with everyone here. 16 is probably the youngest age anyone should be allowed to drive but it is not too young. I live in PA and had to have my permit for 6 months and I do agree with that because it gave me EXPERIENCE and that is whats lacking not age. If you made everyone get their liscense at 18 you would see a major increase in fatalaties in the 18-19 year old range. The mentality of a 16 year old and an 18 year old is not that much different. When the time comes to get your liscense you now have a whole bunch of freedom just dumped on you and many do not have the experience they need. I know its horrible to say but traffic accidents will continue to happen at a very high number with beginning drivers whether they are 16 or 18 the age doesn't need bumped up the amount of time behind the wheel before going out on their own does. Its like riding a bike whether your 5 or 50 if you've never ridden one before your going to fall over your first few times before you get the hang of it.

Increasing the driving age to 18 from 16 will only result in 18-year olds-that do not know how to drive and have no experience versus 16-year-olds that do not know how to drive and have no experience.

In short, I am in favor of how germany does their licenses. cost is between $1500-$2000 and they require intensive driving instruction for an extended time compared to us. They have the autobahn and they have .72 deaths per 100 million car miles versus our .84 deaths per 100 million car miles with speed limits. It is how much professional instruction you get that is really the factor.

Another major thing is that, We americans are given a license, and can wander on the roads any which way we please, slurping our 64ounce quintuple cappuccino's while shaving, putting on makeup, turning around to slap the kids, talk on the phone, pretty much do everything but pay attention to the road, come on, look at the left-lane turtles in Florida... it is illegal to drive in the left in FL, as it is for passing only, but WE never enforce these existing laws . It is ingrained in our culture that the roads are a free-for-all except speeding...

Germans on the other hand, once they get the license, the police equally and strictly enforce all other laws, as on the autobahn there is no speed limit they strictly enforce that the left lane is for passing only, you WILL get a ticket for not yeilding to faster traffic (if you live) in general proper driving educate is enforced otherwise you will pay dearly (we can learn from this) . Another big thing is that Germans take driving seriously and with a passion. They do not talk on the phone, have conversations, slap the kids, shave, they do NOT even have cup-holders. In general they do not allow themselves to be distracted.

Until our culture decides that driving needs to be taken seriously, with no distractions... there in no help or solution for our worsening and more crouded roads (imagine if we behave the same, in 50 years when there are 2-3 x the amount of people and cars on the roads )

and yes I watched the autobahn special on the history channel last night (9th time I might add ) so the stats I gave are REAL !

I agree with your point about extensive training, Red, but you and I both know that will never happen here. I wish it were that way. Heck... I've taken several driving courses because I loved it. One poor weather driving, one defensive, and two racing. When my wife worked for Skip Barber, I was able to take them for free. I wish she still worked there...

Anyway, as far as driving age is concerned, I realize deaths would be up in the 18 year old category, however, I don't see it being nearly as high as the 16 and 17 year old range. At 18, most kids are out of high school. They either go to college or have full-time jobs. Resposibility has changed. I know life was different for me when I graduated. I was working full-time and going to college at night. Did I do stupid things behind the wheel at 18? Sure... But not nearly as stupid or as many times as when I was in high school. I don't know... My mentallity was different I guess.
