  • My Car Started Tonight

I know it probably sounds like a goofy title to most of you but to me it is one of the biggest accomplishments I have ever had. My car has not had a smoothe idle in over a year and hasn't seen 500 miles since this last fall due to one thing after another going wrong. I finally thought I had it fixed late this winter but it only ran good for a day and started acting up again then started making a horrible metal on metal noise from the engine. I parked it and figured I had a spun bearing and that I would fix it as soon as I was done with college for the year. What I thought was a spun bearing turned into 3 spun main bearings and 8 spun rod bearings. Some were so bad they had worn paper thin and laid over top each other I still cannot figure out how a rod never shot out the block. This caused such bad damage to my crank and bearing journals that no machine shop would touch my block or crank they all just said to find a new motor. I found a LT1 with 45k miles for $1,100 on it and that was guaranteed for a month the only stipulation was that the month started as soon I took delivery of the engine so I was under the gun to get it done so I could be sure it would run while under warrantey. I got it last Thursday and didn't start working on it until Friday plus it being a holiday weekend I didn't figure on having it anywhere close to done but at 3AM tonight it fired right up, without a problem or SES light and boy oh boy did those open headers sound good. Also this motor has been done up by someone who knew what they were doing with LT1's. It has better head, intake, and header bolts. I also was going to replace the oil pump but it has a high volume one in it with a metal coupling instead of the plastic and it came with a shiny set of edelbrock headers which I'll be selling shortly . There are a nice set of 1.6 rockers under the valve covers and it may have been wishful thinking but I'm pretty sure I heard some lope in the idle when I started it tonight . The block is also painted and it looks like new which makes me wonder if it wasn't wrecked just after all the work was done. I'm sorry for the long rant but I feel like a little kid on christmas morning right now. I was able to completely piece together a LT1 put in a new clutch assembly and get the engine and tranny back in the car without crossing a single wire, setting the SES light, and other than being tired and running a positive and negative wire to the starter which only took a minute to fix I got it all done in under a week while getting jumped around between 2nd and 3rd shift for my summer job and working well over 40 hrs a week. Also thank you for the advice to everybody whos helped me along the way.

Congrats! It's the best feeling when you do it yourself. Personally, I always take great pride in doing major work and having it fire up on the first try with no SES light.
