  • God bless low end torque!

Last night I was coming home from my friend's house taking 290 east at about 11:30 p.m. At about a quarter mile before my exit, I notice that traffic is really backed up due to an accident. I was in the right hand lane being I was getting off soon, and found myself coming to a dead stop due to the accident. My braking was semi-gradual...not a hard brake at all being I saw it from a good distance away. By the time I stopped, there probably was about 8 feet in between myself and the car in front of me. Literally the second I come to a complete stop, I look in my rear view mirror to see some jack@$$ lane change in to my lane and slam on the brakes (tires screechin and everything). I knew I was going to get hit, and my immediate reaction was nailing it and then slamming my brakes getting to maybe about a foot behind the car in front of me. I couldn't go off on the shoulder being that there were cars driving on the shoulder going up towards my exit. By the time I looked back again, the car had stopped to I'd say about a foot behind me...close enough to where I could not see his headlights in my rear view mirror.

Granted the impact wouldn't have been bad, but who wants to get in to that situation anyways. I can't stand the way people drive around where I live. I realize accidents happen and people do make mistakes, but there is absolutely no reason to come speeding up to an easily visible area where everyone is stopped. Seeing people's brake lights in front of you usually isn't an indication to speed up

None the less, I love torque and I'm happy the paint remains unscratched on my bumper

good job.... chances are the dumba$$ didn't do it on purpose... he probably just wasn't paying attention and when he looked up was faced with stopped traffic. Our lack of driving skills in this country is at epidemic proportions.

I have a similar story... about 2 years ago I was in rush hour traffic and was second in line at a red light with no one behind me because the light i was at was under an overpass.

Traffic was so bad that it was backed up to the point where the car in front of me couldn't go through the intersection because the line of cars for the next light was backed up to our light and if we had tried to go we would have been stuck right in the middle of the intersection.

So when the light turned green the guy in front of me eased up to the edge of the intersection leaving about 5 feet between me and him. Then all of the sudden the I look in my rear view mirror and traffic light behind me had turned green and we had cars coming up behind us. The truck that was coming up behind me apparently was only seeing the green light instead of the two cars stopped at it.

So I hear tires screeching and I look up in my rear view and see a Blue chevy full size truck barreling towards my bumper. So i immediately let off the brakes right before he hit and lucky for me all that happended was when he bumped me my car rolled about 4 feet and stooped short of the car in front of me.

I pulled off the road and checked the damage which was slim to then we had an officer come by and write up an accident report and I went on my way so I could get home and change my shorts.

I've had similar things happen to me too. One time in my old 1979 Olds Regency 98, I had stopped at a red light while it was sprinkling. I look in the mirror like I always do and this red Caravan is coming at me full bore. She hits the brakes, but all it does is slide on the slightly wet pavement. I glance to the right and see that the traffic that has the green light sees what's going on and doesn't move. I slam on the throttle, and get going just enough to get the wheels turning and BLAM! I get out figuring my car is done for, and see no damage at all! I look at her van, and I see why. When I hit the gas, the rearend dropped, and it lined our bumpers up almost perfectly. The only damage to either vehicle? She had a perfect hole in her bumper where my trailer ball had gone through and popped back out.

The other time I was in my ex copcar. Once again, it was raining, but this time really raining. I'm coming up to the interstate and traffic just stops. I know I won't get stopped, so I shoot over into the turn lane and hit the brakes. Well, the guy behind me got the same idea, but he doesn't have ABS. BLAM! I get out, once again, no damage to my car. I look at his, his bumper is destroyed, grill is gone, headlights broken, and hood is bent. The first thing he says is "Please don't call the cops!" So I said, "Dude, your car is effed." He says "I don't care, just don't call the cops". I said "Holla!"

Me too. I was in the Mustang when I heard the sound of screeching tires. I looked in the rear view mirror to see a late 80s Bronco II sliding towards me. I punched it and moved about a car length up till my back bumper was n the white line and my nose was clearing the passing cars by about an inch. He stopped about an inch from me about 45 degrees in the road. Moron.

None of you are even close to my "Painfull" day. I was also sitting at a red light shuffling through CD's when I looked up and the car in my rearview mirror is not stopping. I hit the gas, luckily the light changed instantly, but avoided heading into traffic which had been crossing in front of me.

              That's were my luck changed.

Immediately after making it thru the Intersection I was scrapped on the Driver's side of my Camaro by another car which had been driving in the opposite direction of me on the other side of the road. This individual was sitting at the same red light that I had been, only the intersection was not even with the side streets. Since the side streets are not parallel or run in a straight line his stop light was further away than mine. Not explaining this correctly, but in any event the car approaching his stop light did not see his stopped vehicle either so he turned his wheel to the left so that after being rear ended his car would not hit the one in front of him. Well, while turning his steering wheel his car was struck from the rear and since his wheels were pointed in my lane his vehicle was pushed across the center lane and into my four month old Camaro which had just survived being rear ended.

In the end a 1980 Spectrum scrapped the entire driver's side of my car, with the Driver's Door taking the brunt of the impact. To make matters worse he had a fishing pole hanging out of the driver's window which easily put a 2 Foot long by 3" gash into my quarter panel. So the most important panel of my car, from a documentation standpoint (GM door stickers), the driver's door along with my Rear quarter panel had to be replaced and sprayed.

Did I mention that the accident occured on the day I was putting the car away for the Winter which was Nov. 1st. Honestly don't remember who bailed me out of jail, but that was fun too. The kid only had his license a few weeks. Sorry for the book. Later
