  • Confused about gear ratios???

I was told my 94 Z28 M6 has 3.42 gears. Is this a standard gear for my car or was there any options. I shift out of 1st gear at 45mph! This seems a little high to be 3.42 gears. I want to change to a 4:10 no matter whats in it right now, I just want to make sure I have a 3 series carrier before I order gears. Bone stock I trap 91 in the 1/4 at about 5700 RPM in 3rd gear (my track is at 4200 feet elevation).

Are you shifting at the redline? Stock RPM limits on the M6 are:

    1st gear - 5886 rpm
    2-6th - 5808 rpm

At 5,886 rpm in 1st gear, you would be turning 49.4 MPH with stock tire diameter. If you were short shifting at about 5,400 rpm, you would be around 45 MPH.

As far as 3rd gear, at 91 MPH you should be seeing 5,350 rpm.

All 94 and newer M6's left the factory with 3.42 gears in a 3-series carrier. It isn't likely you have anything numerically lower than the 3.42's, given the numbers you're quoting, even though they don't exactly match. What size tires do you have?

I am running 245/50/16 tires. Those numbers are close enough for me, its possible the factory tach could be off 200-300 rpm at 5886 right? My tack will go to about 6050-6100 when it hits rev limit.

To find out what gear ratio you have now, find the sticker on the inside of your driver's side door. Find a "GU" code. gu4 is 2.73 gu5 is 3.23 and gu6 is 3.42. That's if nothing's been tweeked back there already! Good luck.

Very common for the stock tach to read a couple 100 rpm high at redline.

I got the car from the original 50 year old owner and all he did was change the oil and put gas in it.
