  • Finally, Some Track Times!!!

I was expecting my times to be a little better, but I think the stock Y-Pipe is whats killing me. I guess it's not that bad considering it's mostly stock. On a brighter note, I dont think I could have ever been more consistent. What do you guys make of these #'s?

    First Run 25 PSI
    60'- 2.085
    1/8- 9.004 @ 79.81 mph
    1/4- 14.051 @ 98.28 mph

    Second Run 20 PSI
    60' - 2.061
    1/8- 8.955 @ 80.07 mph
    1/4- 13.985 @ 98.48 mph

    Third Run 18 PSI
    60'- 2.119
    1/8- 9.033 @ 79.56 mph
    1/4- 14.075 @ 98.04 mph

I got in one final pass (last one of the night), but this time I really heated up the tires good. Based on butt-o-meter, this would have probably been my best run of the night. But when I went to pick up my timeslip, they told me they didn't get it. The clocks had been turned off! Oh well.

Depending on the weather conditions and the altitude of the track, you might want to "correct" the timeslips to see how they would look a "standard" conditions.

The track is 1121.27 ft above sea level, and the temperature that day was about 80 in the daytime (1st run) and about 70 towards the end( last 2 runs ). I dont think this info compensates for much. Maybe 2 tenths at the most? There wasn't much of a head wind either. Maybe 10 mph at the most.

Been there. Off of "the 10" and 15, eh? (as LA folks call it )
Didn't realize the elevation was that high though. I'd say those times are about right, but a bit on the slower side. Do you still have the stock i-pipe? Since you still have the stock y, that nulifies most of the power gained through your headers. And once you open that up, you'll probably see the much more gains from every other mod. IMHO, you will gain a few - or more - tenths with that, and upgrading the i-pipe (if you're still using the stock one).

Yeah, the good ol "10." I didn't realize the elevation was that high either until I looked it up on their website. Sorry for the newbnes, but what part of the exhaust is the "I-Pipe?" I have the stock Y from the cats all the way to the collector and "S" part of the pipe. T-Byrne is having a sale, so I'm gonna take advantage and jump on the Random Tech Y-Pipe.

If you need the car to pass SMOG, I wouldn't. The Random Y-pipe isn't street legal, moves the position of the cats. The I-pipe on a dual-cat setup is what connects the muffler to the pass. section of the Y-pipe (driver's section connects to pass. section). If you look under the passenger side of the car, you should see a flange on the pipe under where the passenger seat would be...I think lol. Sorry to give you some bad news .

And yes, I've heard of California Speedway too . Just never been there lol

The "corrections" may be small, but it helps you keep track of the long term changes in your car. With the consistancy you are showing from run to run, it will allow you to keep fairly accurate track of the changes you make to your car and the impact on performance. Barometer and humidity are also factors. If the track gives you "density altitude", it makes it even easier.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that too. But unless the guys doing the smog check are familiar with the stock Y-pipes of 96-97 cars, I dont think they will notice. It's still 2 cats, and it will still pass smog, so hopefully it will work out. If not, ill just have to keep the stock Y in handy. With regards to the "I" pipe, yes, its still stock .

Thanks for the advice Fred! The is the closest, and best track around here, so Ill be doing all my future passes here. The next track is pretty far away (Palmdale for you Cali folks), and that one has an altitude of about 3,500 ft ASL. Furthermore, it's nice to know that I got that extra 2 tenths in the bag. It might just come in handy when Im hitting 12.1 second ET's!

Wow, Palmdale...that's starting to get near the Grapevine
How about Pomona? Do they have any street car events there?

OK, considering you still have the stock I and Y pipes, I think it's almost like an exhaust "restrictor plate." Since we all know how restrictive stock is, maybe those bottlenecks make your exhaust mods nearly ineffective? I'll bet that's the case...and once you open those up, you'll see huge gains. My bet is a minimum 4 tenths.

If you're gonna swap the Y-pipe, definitely keep the stock one on hand in as few pieces as possible. You might be able to get by, but I wouldn't rely on it completely. Stupid smog

Just knowing you were in CA prompted me to mention correcting for altitude. I'm familiar with Palmdale.... used to live in Santa Clarita.

Craig, Pomona is probably the best track in all of California. Unfortunately though, they stopped doing street legal events about 7 years ago.

Im really hoping the new Y will bring new life into my car, and it makes sense that the stock Y is hindering a whole lot of potential. Ill make sure and post some results after the install.

Steve, SMOG definetly sucks! And out of all the states in the US, who has it the worst? But hey, where else can you cruise around in perfect weather all year round?
