  • Fire sleeves and boot protectors worth it?

I've been doing some research on using fire sleeves and boot protectors on headers - particularly the SLPs. I've read some not use any protection, and have been fine. Others have seemed to burn wires even with the sleeves and protectors. It looks like the general consensus is...if the wire touches the header, it will burn no matter what. So I'm thinking, if they're routed well with good use of many zip-ties (not OVC), should I not need to worry about getting these? Or even with good routing, should I invest in them?
    Thanks in advance

Not sure about the sleeves you got with the SLP kit, but the MSD ones I use on the Jeep don't burn, and they sit almost on the primaries for #'s 2 and 4 with the heat riser tube going between them...no problems . The MSD ones are rated at up to 1000 deg. F...that's not a typo .

I run the stock plug wires routed in the stock location with the addition of the Taylor firesleeves. I removed the stock metal boot covers as the firesleeves are just a bit too small for those, they work great! I would recommend using them on each plug wire boot...you can never be too careful. I know I hate replacing plug wires on an LT-1.

I don't have any problem with my current AS&M headers and MSD 8.5mm wires, but my routing is "non-conventional". When I had the bolt-on setup, with JBA headers, and the Electromotive Opti-Eliminator with the Taylor 10.4mm wires , I had a Taylor "fire sleeve" on each boot and never had a problem with a burned wire. This was also a non-conventional wire routing, but might be similar to something someone might run with the Delteq ignition.

You can see the Taylor fire sleeves in this old pic...

I should just get the Taylor fire sleeves then (up to 2000 deg)?

And not the boot protectors (up to 1200 deg)?

Or are they essentially the same thing?

Go with the sleeves, but get 2. 3 ft. wouldn't be enough I don't feel. 6 ft., however, would be good...gives you some extra coverage on the wires.

I only used one package, it seems to me that 6" of sleeving per wire is plenty. The plug end is really the only part exposed to severe heat and the remainder of the wire needs to fit in the looms.

Thanks for your guys' help. I just got 3' of Taylor Fire sleeve. I've heard that the primary is really close in #5 to the boot and plug. Don't know how close, but I'll watch out for it. Just like you said Joe, you can never be too careful. And I too hate changing wires on this car! Plugs are 2 hours...wires are that times 3!
