Car is overheating and I’m finally getting around to fixing my header leak. I would imagine the extra heat coming out from the leak would contribute to my increasing heat problems not to mention this ticking noise is incredibly annoying. When I take off the alternator, how hard is it going to be to put that belt back on? There isn't really any slack in the belt right now so any suggestions on how I am going to get it back on? Anyone know of a tutorial or something? If I remember I looked on shbox.com and there wasn’t anyone about it, but anyone else got suggestions? I do have a Haynes manual… but why make it easy when I have the internet at my disposal?

A couple of thoughts...
Why don't you just use the tensioner to loosen the belt when removing the alternator, then use it again when re-installing it? Unless I'm understanding wrong, the belt should not have much slack, just as you're experiencing...or else you'll hear a squealing if it were too loose. I've removed/installed the alternator so many times now, I got it down to ~5-6 minutes. So it isn't too bad at all.
-- In case you've never done it before, you can see the routing of the belt on your underhood "radiator panel." I believe the tensioner uses a 13mm socket. Just put a breaker bar on the tensioner bolt, turn it clockwise and the belt is free.
Also, is your car overheating as in coolant temp rising too high? If that's the case, I've never heard of an exhaust leak causing that. However, the ticking is probably a result of the leak.

Joe, Craig is right. There is a spring loaded tensioner keeping the tension on the belt. Move the tensioner and take the belt off.
The overheating is probably something else like t-stat, coolant leak, clogged radtiator, fans, etc.96 WS6 Formula: Ram Air, 383 Stroker, Ported LT4 Heads and Manifold, 1.6 Crane Rollers, 58MM T.B., AS&M Headers, Borla Exhaust, Meziere Elec.
