  • nfb: The US Post Office Bites

I like to think of myself as a level headed and forgiving individual. I've been taken way past my limit and I feel like going postal. The US Postal service has become an aging dinosaur that should be put out of it's misery. Lately their service has gone so far downhill that I can't even rely on them to handle a simple letter. That's only the latest part of the rant. In the last 3 months, I have had to deal with the following: Received a damaged swaybar, a lost box of wheel spacers, damaged steering rack, incorrect and late delivery of a box of brake rotors, damaged gauge bezel, damaged and undeliverable letter containing Fred's check for the mufflex, lost teddy bear sent as a gift, damaged computer software (although lucky it is still useable) and above all, crappy customer service.

That in itself is bad, however what will get everyone's blood boiling is the internal unethical issues that are wasting tax payer's money. I have two individuals that work at my shop, their wives work for the Post Office. I hear them joking about the things that go on and I am appauled. Things like during an audit time, (That's when each job is audited as to how long it takes to do a certain route or to handle a customer at the counter over the course of a day) the employees go as slow as humanly possible. On a delivery route they are paid according to how long it takes to do that route. If normally it would take 4 hours, during audit time they make damn sure they drag it out to 8 hours.... that way they are paid for 8 hours. Never mind that any day after the audit, they do the same route in 3.5 hours and spend the rest of the day sitting at home watching the TV while still getting paid. If the employee behind the counter can handle a typical customer in 3 minutes, they purposely slow down everything and hold the customer as long as possible, again to up their pay rate. It is infuriating to stand in line for 45 minutes to mail a package because there is a line literally out the door and you can easily see the clerk is purposely slow. I won't even get into the issue of not delivering the mail in a timely manner, finishing their route completely in a day or the bickering between themselves over who collects tips during the holiday season. To add insult to injury is the joking about going slow during the audit period to make sure they get the highest pay.

No wonder the cost of doing business with the post office is so high, we the consumer are getting ripped off. If this angers you, send a letter (via FedEx) to your congressman, senator and the postal inspectors
....anyone who will listen about the abuses of funds by the US Postal Service.

how about this - my brother packed a set of 1960's era Makita China I inherited from my Great Uncle. He packed every piece in bubble wrap and double boxed it. He ships it via the US postal service and Insured it for $1000 dollars, certified delivery.

When I get it 1/2 the china is broken, both boxes are torn to shreds. It's stamped "Fragile" so small that it is barely readable. So I talk to the post office and ask what happend. The say they do not know. So I asked if I could collect the insurance on it. They say that the shipper has to go through the process, not the receiver. In addition they require that you give back the entire contents of the box. I say ok I'll get on it. Then the postal service states that I have to prove that the contents of the box are worth the insured $1000, and I will NOT ever be allowed to keep what is not broken... My brother does his best at his end of the country... but The USRS (united states Ripoff Service) does not come through

In the end, I decide to keep what is not broken .. which is only half the set .. now it is incomplete .. so They are pretty much useless... and the insurance does not guarantee that they will even pay you out

Whenever someone on eBay uses the USPS, I email a request asking if they would be able to use FedEx or UPS instead, and I'd compensate them for their trouble. If they can't do it, I usually don't bid on the item. I can't stand the postal service.

There was a carpenter I used to work with. I still remain good friends with him. He's been trying to get into the USPS as a mail carrier for years. He passed all the tests they give (which are a joke), but was flat out told he couldn't be hired because he's caucasian. They needed more diversity amongst mail carriers. He's been fed this same line for the past seven years now. Here they would have had a mail carrier that's hard-working, and has a brain in his head. Instead, they play the race card. I understand diversity and everything, but for seven years they couldn't hire a white guy? He's supposedley "next on the list of caucasians".

I'm with Joe... Put this dinosaur down.

That's why I use FedEx or UPS as much as it is humanly possible. I remember coming home one day after work, and it was raining like there was no other. I go to open my front door (we have a lockable screen door with a mail slot in it, and then our front door) and there is no mail there at all. Right before I close the door, I see a letter on top of the stairs. Sure enough, I go outside, and there's our mail....scattered all over the front lawn in the rain

I love the fact that my mail was accesable to anyone who could have walked by. Thankfully it was raining horribly, so no one was out walking. Too bad everything was so soaked that some letters were impossible to read.

There have been countless incidents with my mailman....he's garbage. After all of this, I'll never forget a couple Christmas' ago. On saturday, about a week before Christman, the doorbell rings. Open it up and there he is, with his hand out, demanding for a tip. I gave him a couple of tips alright.... of them having to do with money.

I'm with ya Joe, our mail system is a complete joke.

The USPS gave my headers to a 10 year old, and I got a box of Star Wars toys. Not a very good mod. I wouldent have gotten the headers back if it was not for the kids mother. I guess I could have hung Jar Jar Binks from my rear view.

At least they arn't going on killing rampages anymore, you have to look at the bright side of things.
As for UPS, I hate them I buy things from ebay from the states and I live like a hour away from the border, for a 100 dollar item I have to pay 65 bucks extra 15 bucks for taxes and 50 dollars for broker and processing fees and and thats on top of the postal fee's they charge me for using them in the first place. They also only do invoices once a month so one month I bought a few things and a good month after I recieved them I get bills in the mail for like $200+ not varry nice.

The good news is the USPS service is totally self-supporting. Not one dime of taxpayer’s money goes to this organization. Luckily they aren't that bad around here. My brother-in-law is a postman and I can assure you that he is not like that. I do know that they have some serious management problems. He was asked several times to be promoted and refused because it is just screwed up beyond repair.

FYI UPS asked for help from the USPS to deliver the new Harry Potter book last Saturday because they couldn't handle the volume.

Ya’ll have probably heard this one before. FED-EX and UPS have decided to merge. The new organization will be called FED-UPs

I have a friend that is a postal carrier and is nothing like that. However there are jerks that work everywhwere.

The auditing works the other way as well, let me explain....if a carrier is seeming to take too long on a route then a supervisor has to go out and walk the route with him to make sure he isn't goofing off.

I speak for only a single carrier, but I know he works his A$$ off. When we have basketball or softball on the weekends hes always whipped. He ends up working till 6 or so each day because a lot of times he carries from guys routes who are running behind, so maybe those guys are the ones goofing off.

Another thing he explains is that carrying mail is tougher because they have all kinds of things to deliver, whereas UPS and FEDEX only deliver parcels.

There are idiots who work for all three, no doubt.

I've got to go to bat for the USPS here. My mail carrier goes out of her way for us. Any package that is too big for the mailbox she brings to the porch. If we're hear, great. If not, she'll leave just the package behind the pillars on our porch (so you can't see it unless you walk up) and put the rest of the mail in the mailbox where it belongs. My counter help is always very friendly, even their back-ups treat everybody nice. The two main ones know me by my first name because I am in there every week, and we talk about family, motorcycling, whatever just like they were any of my other friends. A few weeks ago, I got a magazine that came in that was in a USPS plastic bag with a letter attached. The magazine had gotten torn on the edge (like less than an inch) and they put it in a bag for me. The letter apologized for the damage to the magazine and explained the situation. My priority mail sendouts get to their destination in 2 days, not 3, every letter I have ever sent has been received, every rebate form that I've mailed off has gone through without a hitch, absolutely no complaints.

Now, my UPS and FedEx guys go above and beyond too. If I'm not here (I have signature waiver on everything now) they will even go so far as to hide a package and leave a hanger on the door that says where it is. If it's big, they'll leave it on the back porch. I've even had the UPS guy leave his cell phone number when my first set of wheels came in so he could come by later that day and drop them off again! The only problem I have with them is that there retail locations are a pretty good clip from my house when I want to ship something, and UPS' prices are outrageous.

DHL is who I have a problem with. They are the cheapest, and their ground is lightning fast, but they are twice as far away as UPS and FedEx, and they don't require signature for anything. I had some tires come in and they left them in the front yard! They also will not take a Return to Sender in the field, you have to take it back to the store and return it.

Anyway, I'm glad I don't have the USPS problems you guys have. If I could ever get a job with them, I'd be on it like white on rice. Of course, right now I'd take any job that has job security and guaranteed retirement. And the only way you can get that in this day and age of mergers and layoffs is with the government.

I tried to get a job there once when I was laid off. I applied from an ad in the paper to fill an Electronic Tech position in the main Postal office downtown to replace a guy that was retiring. I was sent an application packet which contained 5 pages of questionaires and another 18 pages of Skills Sets which I had to write an entire page of examples about how I know how to solder, work at heights, use power tools, and crap like that - one page for each skill that they were looking for. Two months later, I then had to go downtown to take the Civil Service exam which took about 3 hours to do. Four months after the test, and my test had been corrected by someone in Washington DC, I received my score of 96 + 5 points for being a vet - I was put on a list according to my score, but was not told what position in the list I was at. Another two months after that I had an interview downtown with three people at one time and had to do the entire application packet verbally including all the skillset pages. No furthur contact for another 8 months, then I received another interview appointment which I ignored, because by that time I had a good job and wasn't going to leave for the night shift and $17/hr even if I got the job.

The thing is that I found out that out of the roughly 120 people who applied for the position 84 showed up to take the exam. About 40 of those passed and were called in for a first and maybe second interview with the supervisors & personnel dept. Can you even imagine the tremendous amount of resources it took for the Post Office to do all of this for one position that was opening up whenever this one guy decides to retire???

I've never had any problem with the USPS aside from a couple broken items that didn't appear to be their fault (wasn't torn up, etc..) and every mail carrier I've had has always been very friendly. Maybe it's just me, but if I was a mail carrier I wouldn't expect a tip from anyone.... you're just doing your job!

The mail carrier I have right now is good. The one before him was a complete dolt. The carriers are usually okay, it's all the in-between problems I've mostly encountered. Damaged packages, missing mail, the post office itself (at least the one in my town is horrible. It's equivelant to the DMV here).
