  • Help! Code 1406

Ok, I need some help. Its been a while since I’ve asked for help with my 2 F bodies, but you all were very helpful before, so maybe you can help me again.
My son’s 97 Firebird, 3.8, automatic, 3:08 rear end, etc, had a Service Engine Soon light come on yesterday. I have a code reader, and I am getting a code 1406 I have two books that have the list of possible codes that can be read, but there is no 1406. Does anyone know what this could be? So far, he says that the car is running ok, but I want to get it taken care of.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

AutoTap has a code lookup, but you will need the VIN# info to decipher the auto line and engine code.

Appears P1406 is for the EGR valve pintle position feedback, but you should verify that for your specific year/model/engine combo on hte AutoTap website:

    http://www.autotap.com/codes.asp

The V6 has a fairly complicated, expensive EGR valve with electronic actuation and position feedback. May need cleaning or may need replacement. But I don't know that much about the V6 cars, so maybe someone else on here could provide more consice info.

Thanks Fred, I'll check that out. I replaced the Egr valve with a new one about a year and a half ago. It has about 13,000 miles on it, so if that is what it is, maybe I can try to clean out the carbon and see what that does.
      Thanks again-
