  • Dang.... it's hard not to speed in my 93.

I drove my 93 6 speed to work today and had a hard time keeping the speed down. At 65, the tach read only 1400 rpm.
I have the 2.73 rear gears and found the speed kept creeping up. Off the line performance is really great, I'm suprised with the cruiser gear... it must be that ultra low 1st gear from the 93 M6.

'93 manual Z28's had a 2.73 rear gear?!? I know the other gearing was slightly different, but that's a big change to the 3.42 in later years.

Here is the breakdown from F-body Tech Database. Dang, that first gear is pretty short.

    Year 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th
    1993 3.36 2.07 1.35 1.00 0.80 0.62 (std)
    1993 2.97 2.07 1.43 1.00 0.80 0.62 (G92)
    1994+ 2.66 1.78 1.30 1.00 0.74 0.50

    4L60-E 3.06 1.62 1.00 0.70

    What the heck is G92??

93 had 2 different gearboxes. The M29 that came with the 3.23 car and the M28 that came with the 2.73 cars. Here are the transmission gear ratios:
      M28 M29 94+
      3.36 2.97 2.66 1st gear
      2.07 2.07 1.78 2nd gear
      1.35 1.43 1.30 3rd gear
      1.00 1.00 1.00 4th gear
      0.80 0.80 0.74 5th gear
      0.62 0.62 0.50 6th gear

That 3.36 first gear get's it out of the hole nicely.

Yea, 1st gear with the 2.73 rear was 3:36:1. I think that final ratio is even a tiny bit more than 3.42s with a 2:66 1st.
For the 3.23s in '93, it was 2.97:1.

Edit: ah dang Joe, you beat me to it

I don't know, my 93 with 3.23s scoots pretty nicely . I flirt with the thought of switching to 3.42s and having the tranny gears changed when it comes time for a rebuild...then I "remind" myself how easily she spins off the line if I'm not careful lol .
