  • Gut cat or buy aftermarket?

Is there much of an advantage to gutting the cat or buying an aftermarket converter?

I am really leaning more towards buying an aftermarket cat more so than gutting the stock one.

I have a Borla exhaust too and don't want to worsen the sound.

    Any opinions?

Do you have emissions in OH? I would say lose the cat. But if you must have one, I'd get the SS magnaflow hi flow cat. Screw gutting it. Not worth all the work.

I gutted the cat on my Jeep Wrangler and noticed a difference. However the smell was terrible if the windows were down or the top was off. I ended up putting it back on. I have heard most people say it doesnt make much difference. I thought about it on my Z28 but I might just get the high flow.
You can count on a catless car smelling funky.
      My 2 cents

Option #3 - leave it alone. A gutted cat gives the exhaust a hollow/tinny sound. You could clean it up by putting a 2.5" tube through the shell, but the real question is "why bother"? It not going to make much difference.

I run my car with either dual 3" CarSound high flow cats, or drop them out and replace them with Borla 3" XR1 mufflers for the track (leaded fuel). The cats are louder than the Borlas.
