  • Do deep transmission pans reduce ground clearance?

    I'm currently looking at both a B&M and Hughes Performance deep transmission pan, both pans increase fluid capacity by around 3 quarts. I was wondering on the 4L60E would the pan be so low to the ground that it might bottom out and scrap? I was hoping that someone here on the board might have a deep pan and would be able to tell me how much ground clearance they lost by switching to a deep pan.

    I don't have a deep pan, but I do know that there is a good amount of clearance between the bottom of a stock pan and the ground. I would imagine that a deep pan wouldn't be a problem...even if your car is lowered.

      As long as it does not hang lower than the exhaust...cause it would seem to me, for example, that when you roll your front wheels off a speed bump, its gonna head straight for the pan if it hangs lower IMO.
      95 Z28, A4, 3.23's and some other stuff....

        I just went to the B&M site and took a look at a couple of pictures of deep pans. It appears that they only come down an extra inch or two at the most...I wouldn't think it should be a problem for you.

          I had a deep tranny pan that held 2 extra quarts for my 700R4... can't remember the manufacturer now though... It was pretty low! I measured it once and it left exactly 4 inches of clearance between it and the ground. It would scrape on every speed bump I went over unless I went so slow that there was absolutely NO suspension travel at all coming down off the speed bump. Most speed bumps are apparently 3.99 inches tall. The first speed bump I hit with that pan on I thought I ripped it off. I went over bumps very slow, as most of us probably do in our f-bodies, but there was still suspension travel. I hit that bump at my normal speed and came down on the pan so hard I thought I was going to be mopping up tranny fluid. It turned out it was fine, but it definately reduced clearance. I'd say by about 1 - 1.5 inches. Our driveway was gravel, and it was raised up in between the two paths for the tires. It would even scrape on that if I wasn't off to one side.

            Agree with Dave. I have an ATI pan and it is 4" clearance. The only thing it ever hit on was one of those triangle shaped metal speed bumps that the Walmart lawn & garden center runs its hoses thru (also about 4").

              For comparison's sake, GM says the ground clearance of a stock '02 WS6 is 4.5".
