  • Can't catch a break

Got my new prom last sunday. The car ran for 3 days then, kaput. Replaced the starter on friday. This wasn't the reason my car wasn't starting (bad starter enable relay). Now I have a new starter. I'm happy about that since the old one was looking kinda rough. I had been smelling some burning antifreeze but just figured that was from the 3 week old water pump breaking in. It was only an occaisional whiff. Not too strong to cause any major concern. I changed my oil this morning and as I was looking up something "not oil" was dripping. Turned out it was antifreeze....dripping from the back of the block. I started freaking out. I looked at the top of the engine and there was no coolant sitting on the intake next to the thermostat (I was hoping that it was a leaky thermostat gasket). Then I notice that it's dripping off of the hood about right where the serp belt is. Is my waterpump leaking? No. I fill 'er up with oil and start it up. No leaks now. Wait for it to warm up. Squeeze the upper radiator hose to see if the thermostat has opened. Bingo! pinhole in the hose. It was really comical. A tiny stream of water like a squirt gun was squirting straight up into the air. I almost ran inside to get my camera but then I noticed that the stream had started to land on my alternator. I'm not gonna sacrifice my alt for a funny picture. Hopefully I'll get the wash/wax in I planned to do before the family functions kick in today. This hose is gonna set me back about an hour with the trips to the parts store and such.

At least you found it before it became a major leak and it left you on the side of the road with an overheated engine.

I've had radiators, over the years, with holes like that. Tiny little stream and only when hot. Near impossible to find.

One of the best tool investments I've made is a cooling system pressure tester. That way you can check the system cold.

So your car was peeing into the air!

My car actually peed on me once! It had a crack in the radiator just below the filler neck and when I openned the hoof the stream shot me square in the belly with hot coolant. It was time for a new radiator! You're lucky it was only a hose.

Everything's cool now. In the past 2 1/2 months I've put in a new radiator, new hoses, new water pump, new thermostat, new prom and a new starter.
This weekend I'm probably buying an LT1 so the 3rd gen can be retired from daily drivership and get some real TLC.
