Alleged Road Rage Shooter Heads To Court

A 55-year-old Malden, Mass., man will be in Lynn District Court Thursday, accused of shooting a mother and her teenage son in an apparent case of road rage.

NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that William Green, 55, will be arraigned on a variety of charges including two counts of armed assault with intent to murder and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Green was arrested on Route 1 in Peabody about 30 minutes after Lynn mother Linda Umphrey, 52, and her son Greg, 17, were shot in the back after a roadway altercation. Greg Umphrey wrote down Green's license plate number as Green allegedly sped away in his Subaru Forester following the shooting at 95 Nahant Street.

Linda Umphrey, who was driving her car, was shot in the shoulder. Her son was shot in the back. Both were listed in fair condition at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Relatives of the Umphreys said they are in shock.

"I don't know. I just don?t understand what goes on in people's minds that they can do something like that," said relative Randy Randazzo.

Green was licensed to carry a firearm.

Authorities said it was the second violent case of road rage in two days in Massachusetts. Tuesday, 27-year-old Brockton, Mass., father Sandro Andrade was getting his 10-month-old daughter out of his car when he was shot five times in the head following an apparent altercation. Walter Bishop, 60, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail.

While police warn drivers not to get involved in fights with other motorists, one local psychologist said the recent increase in road violence may have to do with a "culture of fear."

"Everyday we're bombarded with images of danger, whether it's on the subway with the London bombings, whether it's Sept. 11, whether it's the person next door, I think it's this general level, and for susceptible individuals, the level pushes them over the top, and then they're over the top and then get, sort of one more piece added on, we have these kinds of terrible, violent explosions," Dr. Stuart Goldman said.

Experts also said heat and humidity can lead to an increase in violence.

I guess this is a case where "old guys don't rule.........

Living just south of Mass here in Connecticut, this has been all over the news. It's absolutely crazy. I know there was a period of time when this was happening in L.A., bit never anywhere around here. Crazy.

Don't count on it... That is, as you know, the Kennedy state. Let's also not forget John Kerry is from Mass. They'll try to "rehabilitate" the shooters.

I disagree... I do think the judicial system needs to make prisoners sit in a boring jail that all they have access to is the Bible... but I don't wish death on anyone...

              then we agree to disagree.

somebody cold bloodedly takes the life of another human being, and my tax dollar goes to support his weight lifting and tv watching in jail........?

no way. prisons are full as it is. people with 30, 40, even 50 years sentences, or life are getting out on "parole'....... then whamo... you read in the news where they did it again.......

death when proven guilty beyond any doubts.

              sorry.

              my 2 centavos.

I respect your opinion, but read what I wrote again and you'll see that we agree more than you think... I don't think that they should be weight lifting and watching tv... i said they should be sitting alone with access to nothing but a bible... I absolutely agree 100% that jail is too easy, #&!! if I didn't have money to live on, with the judicial system as it is right now, I'd want to get arrested too... but that's not what I'm supporting... I just don't believe it's our right as humans to decided if and when someone should die... if we kill them, we're just as wrong as they were for killing the people in the first place...

This is always an interesting debate. I side with having the death penalty. Even if this person is sitting a boring jail cell, we still have to support them. Plus, being all alone for the rest of one's life is insanity. It's probably less cruel to just inject them and be done with it. I don't necessarily believe we would be to blame for killing them. The murderers and such know the rules. If they break them, then by those standards they are just killing themselves.... we're just assisting.

I don't know... i just feel like having to live the rest of your life thinking about what you did is a lot worse punishment, and for people who can do something so horrible that is what I wish, the worst punishment possible.... killing them puts them out of their misery... Plus, unless they decided to be sorry for what they've done right before they're killed we are giving them a one way ticket straight to hell because they don't have time to think about what they've done and why it's wrong... and personally I don't wish hell on anyone...

I can see your view, and it's a solid one. It seems we all agree that no "rehabilitation" should be done to these people. That's a plus. I guess I'm from the old school of an eye for an eye. I completely agree we need to rid the country of these far too lenient jails.
