  • Brake Pedal, & Gas Pedal NON Sensitive

How come the gas pedal, and brake pedal in my car is so NON sensitive. (Is their air in the brakes, or something?) My moms Taurus station wagon has VERY responsive brake pedal, and gas.

If the brake pedal is not responsive, it could be you need new brakes, or they may need bleeding. When did you do the brakes/check them last?

As far as the gas pedal goes, what is it exactly doing that makes it feel unresponsive? Is there a delay when pushing the pedal down? Is there just a lack of power at certain RPM's? If so, it's not the accelerator that's the problem.

Does your pedal just feel kind of "squishy"? Your Mom's Taurus may feel more responsive, but if what you're talking about is how stiff the pedal feels, that's just Ford. My Wife's Exploder and my Brother's old Bronco both have stiff accelerators.

Does the break pedal travel far when you push it down? My master cylinder had an internal leak nand was causing a lack of pressure in the break lines, so the pedal would travel really far, once i replaced it and stepped on the breaks for the first time my face almost hit the steering wheel!

As far as the accelerator goes a little more info might help, like when it occurs and what else happens (or doesnt happen) as you try to push it down at various times.

Yes, my brake pedal travels far down when I hit the brakes. If I just tap it with my foot it does'nt even really slow down its like just a bunch of air in the lines. Yes, mushy accelerator pedal. Its got the torque, and power you just have to mash on the gas pedal. The Taurus brake, and accelerator pedal you hardly have to tap, and get a nice response out of it. Maybe its normal with these cars just wondering. I prefer the Taurus pedals. lol

Ford puts stiff springs behind the accelerator. It's just what I've experienced. If the torque and power are there, it's nothing to worry about.

As far as the brakes go, it could be a number of things. It could be in need of bleeding, which is where I'd start, then check the master cylinder. Also, try finding enough cardboard to lay under your car overnight. There could be a miniscule leak somewhere like the brake lines. Start with bleeding them first.

Do you prefer a stiffer spring behind accelerator pedal, or a mushy 1 like we have?

I'm actually used to GM pedals. I don't know... I equate the stiffer spring to creating an illusion of power. It "feels" more powerful when you have to push harder on the accelerator, but it's not really more pwerful. I had a friend who owned a '69 Chevelle. The car needed a ton of work, but he doubled up the tension on his spring. To him, it felt more powerful.... it wasn't. It was just a stock 307.

To be honest, I'm not sure if cars still use springs under the accelerator. I would assume so, but I haven't looked since I had my '84 Grand Prix.

muffler bearings are going out on ya..........

may be time to change the oil in your AIR pump too...............

                brakes, what these guys said.
gas pedal? check you throttle linkage to see if its binding slightly anywhere or there is a build up of cr@p at the swivel control on the throttle body in the spring and hinges.
