i noticed after having my 4.10's installed, at speeds over 70mph my car would shake and i could not figure out why. i took my car to the dealer and they told me there was a bulliten on my driveshaft not being ballanced, and told me they could get me a new driveshaft for $420. io said thats dumb ill just get the one i have ballanced. i got it ballanced today and on the test ride home i realized it rattled even worse. im bout to shoot myself fellas please help me. thanks~gunter

First - dont shoot yourself If it happened directly after the gear install, I would take it back to the installer, one of the axle bearings could be cocked or something, or the gears could be binding. Could be a number of things.

The stock steel driveshaft will typically vibrate with higher numerical rear axle ratios..... happens to many cars, not all.

The problem I believe has been traced to an off-center yoke, so balancing is not necessarily a "cure". I have never heard of anyone having succes with balancing the stock steel shaft.

The commone cure is to get an aluminum DS from the 1LE models, or from an LS1. I think you can get these for about $200 through the online discount GM parts dealers. The install will take you about 20 minutes.

This is a common problem with Mustangs. The yoke wears because of the suspension travel. As the car moves up and down, the yoke slides in and out of the trans. When it wears, it no longer rotates about it's center of mass. I went to 3.73 in my Mustang and it showed up then too. I took mine to have it "balanced" and watched them do it. They put it on a lathe with a dial indicator. They cut the weld off, knocked it around till it had almost no run out, and re-welded it. They did not balance it. It did not help. I bought an aluminum driveshaft that came with a new front yoke. It fixed it. Funny when I was in buying it, another guy came in who had done the exact same thing I did with another driveline shop. I can't guarantee putting in an aluminum driveshaft will help, but it reduces the rotating mass by 2/3rds so if the yoke is worn, it won't have near the mass to shake the car.

          Fred, is that Bruce Springstein?

If you are in Atlanta now, this place is local. http://www.yearone.com/ They are a little pricey but if you want it the same day, they are about the only place to go here.

Listen to Fred on this...... balancing a stock steel driveshaft is futile. Not only that, by it's design it reaches critical speed far sooner that what I consider safe. I would go with either a 1LE aluminum shaft, or an aftermarket aluminum, steel or carbon fiber depending on the thickness of your wallet.

i have 4:10's. and i got the alluminum drive shaft for free from my dealer under the tsb which kicked to warranty IF the stock shaft could not be made not to vibrate. the trouble is.. you cant let your dealer know you have 4:10's in there. mine didnt care.

fred is right. its futile to try and balance the stock beamoth.

and Mustangs dont have a d#mn thing to do with his prob......J........hahahahahahahahaahahahaaaaaa

                      listen to Fred.

yes. before the 4:10's!!!!!! at speeds of over 85mph.

now.....the kicker was...after gm replaced so many of those shafts..if you went in and said "it does it over 75 or 80mph"..then you did not get the shaft (well...you did......actually) cause they WOULD not replace it cause thats over the legal speed limit in every state!
