Putting the LT4 conversion on a stock LT1 will not give you 425HP. That claim is based on an engine dyno test done by More Performance at least 3 or 4 years ago. They got 429flywheel HP.

But it was not a "stock" engine in the sense that it had Hooker LT headers, a larger than stock throttle body (52MM?) and was tuned using a $3,000+ aftermarket engine management computer. I suspect there were a few other changes that More forgot to mention.

You can probably be looking at something in the 400+HP range with the LT4 conversion. Good headers would make a big difference. Then you need the larger TB and some very good tuning. And, to make use of a slightly "peaky" HOT cam, you are looking at maybe some 4.10 gears for an M6 or 3.73's and a 2,800 stall convertor for an A4.

At least 1/2 the people will tell you that you could get your stock LT1 heads ported to flow more than the stock LT4 heads, get a slightly more aggressive cam than the LT4 HOT cam, and make even more HP for the same, or even less $$$$. That is true, if you can find a reliable head porter, and IF you have the knowledge to pick the right parts. The LT4 conversion kit puts everything in a neat package and make life easier.

The LT4 kit is about $2,300. Add another $1,000 for coated LT headers/y-pipe, and a throttle body. I would guess that install and tuning could run another $1,000. So you are looking at $4,000-4,500 plus the drivetrain upgrades.

      Well.......

If you assume that you could get the 425 HP figure by doing all that Fred outlined.....

      $10.00 per HP ..... ain't bad at all !

Of course... that's not counting the base price of the stock car & engine...
