  • Auto shifter to tranny problem

Driving home the other night, shifting the auto into OD it felt really loose. So i played with it a little on the way home.

It feels like its not locking into the specific gear/drive. Ie: shifting from '1' to '2' it wont lock in less i go past '2' and back to '2'. And when i start her, the shifter was in Park, but it was actually in reverse (it wont lock into park). The reverse lights go out... I have to put the button in to shift it from 'P' to 'R' and vice-a-versa... and it will start... But the tranny is in reverse.

There is no grinding... No hard shifting... Once its locked into 'drive'/'reverse' it drives like there is nothing wrong. Any ideas on how to fix it?

    Thanks!

this is EXACTLY what happend to me, the linkage moved. i put the car up in the air and found that two of the tranny pan bolts were gone and some others were a little loose. just check that out and torque them all to the right spec.

take off the center consol cover...

your shifter moves a series of cables back and forth...and the cables are held in place by brackets, if the brackets is loose or broken, you get the play in the shifter like your described.

I took it off, not really sure what to look for... but everything seemed to move ok. Not sure what the brackets are supposed be like, but ill take a better look tomorrow.

          Thanks guys.

SWEEET!!!!!!! That fixed it. All the bolts were tight except for the 2 that hold the line to the tanny (driver side). One fell out, the other was pretty far out. Tightened the one, and now its shifting like normal. Just gotta get another bolt.

            THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
