  • Intake Manifold Oil Leak....

I started a thread about smoke out of the exhaust a while back and now I have a whole other demon to fight. It now seems I have the intake manifold leak that some of you guys have talked about. It seems that oil is leaking from the back of the motor and onto the y-pipe and converter.

If I drive more than five minutes, when I get out I can look under the car and see smoke coming off of the converter. When checking closely I can see oil on the pipe in front of the converter and the converter itself. There is also oil around the whole bottom of the motor but it's worse near the converter.

When I stop at lights I actually get a light smoking through the back of the hood even, where the seams between the hood and fender near the windshield, but it's coming from below.

Anyway, am I looking at major time or money to fix this?

I only want the car to get through the next couple of months as I am going to be starting on a stroker when the weather gets cold.

Anyone who has done this please help me out!!

Hey Ken, In that LT1 intake leak fix you mention the selant but dont say what kind. Is there a special sealant you used or just a high heat silicone?

I use high temp black. I know some have used high temp copper, but that seems to be overkill. you can see the thick bead in the photo....

It's not going to leak, that's for sure.

I used Ultra Black and it worked flawlessly. Almost too good because it sure was hard to get the intake manifold off this last time.

Ultra black is more than sufficient. If your motor gets over ~400°F, the intake manifold leaking will be the least of your worries. Most parts stores now carry the pressurized cans of ultra black. Makes life easy.

If it is your first time, 4-6 hours. If you have done it before, hour and a half tops.

I can do it in 2½ hours including a lunch break, but for the average person figure 4 hours with breaks. Let it sit overnight and fire it up.
