  • question on LT4 intake manifold

If i just purchase this part, will i see a gain in horsepower? And if so how much? I have a intake manifold oil leak but if i going to go to the trouble to fix it i like the looks of the Lt4 intake, or can i have mine ported or something like that to gain power?

No.. you will see zero gain from buying the LT4 Intake .... it only matches up to LT4 heads .... Just porting your intake is only a small part. Withouth better flowing heads to use that extra air its just not worth the effort..

A: Won't fit. Top of LT4 intake manifold will hit valve cover rail on LT1 head. One of them needs to be machined to have them mate up.

B: No gains whatsoever. The LT4 intake ports, as shipped from the factory, are virtually identical to the LT1 intake ports. The runners just have more metal in the roof, so that the ports can be extended 0.100" to match the prots on the LT4 heads. But, as shipped from the factory, the LT4 intake isn't even a good match for the LT4 heads. It takes a bit of porting to get the LT4 intake to support a good set of LT4 heads.

The red powdercoat does look good, though

So, is this a good idea if I am porting stock heads. I have read before that the stock intake runners are not big enough and you lose some power there. Is there any truth to that?

200 bucks to make sure I get the most out of the ported heads is worth it to me. However if it's extensive work to mate them up than it may be more trouble than it's worth.

If the LT4 intake is matched to the LT1 heads will that be a good performance gain?

You can do it yourself in an afternoon, but you might want to get a standard abrasives kit of cartridge rolls & also the short & the 6" carbide cutters for non-ferrous metals for getting into the manifold. Some guys have cut it apart to really get into there. You can dip the cutters in a bit of Marvel Mystery Oil or tranny fluid to keep the aluminum from clogging the flutes of the cutters. It's OK for the heads ports to be a little larger than the intake ports for reversion reasons. Just like header to head exhaust port fitment.

So, all in all there is more potential to make power with the LT4 intake, even if you are using LT1 heads, right?

I am trying to determine if it's worth the 200 dollars.

I think the big difference is that there is more room for porting the LT4 manifold - the port walls obviously are thicker when you look at them side by side. There are special GM performance gaskets for ported LT4 applications. I am no expert, though, on what the matchup is with LT1 heads, since I have aftermarket LT4 heads and I didn't spend any time looking at it with the original heads I had. Sorry I can't help you there. My best guess is save your $200 for a cam or something and port your LT1 manifold to smooth out the casting flash and match the head ports.

Got ya. I'm getting a 355 built so the cam is already on the shopping list! I'll have him smooth out the LT1 intake as originally planned. Thanks.
