Crankshafts come in a wide variety of flavors, ranging from a cast crank that might not be a whole lot stronger than the stock crank ($200) to a high alloy forging or even a crank carved from a piece of billet for several thousand $$$$.

The Callies DragonSlayer is a popular mid-range crank.... about $750 I think. The next step up would be the Callies RaceMaster at $1,200 (I have one of these, but they used to be called the Stealth), and their top of the line is over $2,000.

    Its all relative.

For an naturally aspirated engine, you could live with a cast crank, but the small extra $$$ for a low end forged crank would be a wise investment. Once you start looking at blowers and nitrous, the costs start to increase dramatically.
