What would happen if i were to deactivate the system altogether? Would my car fail emissions?
I'll wait for a while, then i'll go to the GM dealer up the street.

It's funny. People kept telling me, "Don't buy a Firebird or Camaro. They're nothing but mechanical problems!", yet so far my only problem is capable of being eliminated by simply unplugging something. I love my car

No. It's only used at startup to get the converter to heat up faster to reduce the emissions for the first few minutes of operation. If you get your car good and hot it will pass the same as with it hooked up.
