Whats the purpose of this? It looks like it goes in the place of the a/c compressor. Any ideas??

The alternator relo bracket, at least the ones made by SJM Manufacturing or Madman Racing, are used when the only thing you have to run on the belt is the alternator.... i.e. PS, A/C, stock accessory mounting bracket and tensioner delete.
The bracket holds the alternator and allows the adjustment to tension the belt.Fred
