NFB - Need tranny help (SVT Contour)

My husband was driving his car away from a stoplight, and as he went to put the car into third, the car stuck in second and the gear shift felt like it broke free from controlling the gears (I dunno how to explain it better than that). So now the car is stuck in second and the gear shift just flops around between the third and fourth positions but doesn't lock into any position. Hope that makes sense. Any and all help greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

It's a 1998 SVT Contour, all stock, manual (obvoiusly).

Just wanted to let everyone know that I fixed the problem tonight. Shift cable end came off when the bushing broke I guess. Looked down and it was gone and the cable was just kinda hanging there. Spent $5 on a bushing and she's as good as new. I'm kinda proud of myself... first functional problem with a car that I've fixed, with the help of a guy on the SVT forum. Of course, my husband isn't going to admit to them that I fixed it, lol, but I know anyway, and that's what counts.
