  • 1994 Camaro with Problems .. need help

Hello all, I'm new here. I dont own a camaro, but I am helping my friend fix his 1994 Camaro with the V8 engine.
I am very familuar with Fords, and can rebuild an AODE transmission, so I said I'd help him with his Camaro, with the 4L60E transmission.
Its been sitting in his backyard since 2002, and rats decided to make a nest above his engine, so we started cleaning it out to work on it.
So far It looks like I need to replace the water pump; the car got really hot just driving down the street to get it to my house, and there is a pinhole in the radiator. I have replaced the water pump and opti-spark in my other firends 1995 Corvette, but it doesnt seem like the opti-spark has failed yet, the engine runs fine, it just gets way too hot.
There also seems to be a broken motor mount.
Aside from that, in early 2002, he took the car to AAMCO to fix the transmission. They said they rebuilt it, and after it was done, there was a leak coming from the passanger side of the transmission, above the catalytic converter. He tried to take it back in to get fixed, and they told him that it was a computer issue, and that needed to be replaced before they could do anything with the transmission.
It seems that the car is missing 1st gear and 4th gear, and still has the leak.
I tried to do a search on these forums, but didnt really find anybody with a simular problem as what we are looking at.
The car does not have a Service engine light, so I dont agree with the computer issue, I think they did a bad job of rebuilding the transmission, especially since it leaks and they said " its normal to leak for a while after a rebuild " ... yeah right.
Apparently, he had the exhaust welded, and there was a small hole above the cat, where transmission fluid leaked into the cat .. so he drilled holes in the bottom of the cat as well to drain out the fluid.
So right now I'm looking to replace quite a few parts on this Camaro, and I'll probably end up dropping the transmission to rebuild it myself.
What I was wondering from this Forum of F-body owners is ..

Is it possible that the computer is the problem ??

If not, and I am looking to rebuild the transmission, what parts should be upgraded in addition to the normal clutch plates, thrust bearings, etc .. ( we dont plan on any power adders ), but may want to put a shift kit in the transmission and Ive heard about upgrading some of the Servos with Corvette units.

Also, could the catalytic converter be causing these symptoms ? I would guess maybe the apparent loss of 1st gear or low end torque, but he said there is no 4th gear on the freeway, it just revs way out in 3rd. I dont plan on driving it very far, because it isnt in the best condition and has no tags.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated by both me and my friend.
    Thanks
    - Dan
