Your best bet...pick Fred's brain. I believe his stoked motor makes 500 hp at the flywheel NA. On nitrous, he's about 650hp. He chose the LT4 head because of it's potential later on. That would be my choice...

Just some cautions on copying what I did....
My engine was planned nearly six years ago. A lot has changed, particularly with respect to head selection. I think it is worth it to look around at what is available today.
My reaction to seeing a goal of 500HP was along the lines that its really not that hard to achieve, and doesn't need a lot of exotic parts. My engine only made 486 flywheelHP (measured on an engine dyno, with full intake and full/muffled exhaust). But it has a fairly small cam, to allow it to pass NJ rolling emissions. The engine has many "compromises" on power, due to the need to design for the high level nitrous use (it's currently making 800 flywheelHP on nitrous). The pistons will be heavier, the dropped ring pack makes them less stable, the rings have to be set for the nitrous, cam LSA is wider, etc. All of those things can reduce the HP.
I would also caution that some of the parts in my setup are overkill.... I had hoped someday to take it to the 1,000hP level (but probably never will). You don't need a $1,200 Callies crankshaft and $1,200 Oliver billet rods for what you appear to be doing.
Good luck!Fred

Thanks, guys.
I will be spending less than 5k easy on this motor if I keep the stock heads and intake and have them ported. There is obviously some value to a new shortblock though.
Before we were figuring around 5k with new heads.
He does all of his work in his own garage, has no overhead, and has discounts with manufacturers of many of the parts. It is clear to me after reading the posts that he is saving me a boatload of cash. His son is a good friend of mine and I know he is giving me a huge break on his work too.
The thing I'm most happy about is that I won't have to worry about learning all about cams. I know how important they are but don't understand them at all. He has told me to just tell him what I want and he will make it run that way.
He's also re-doing my transmission so I don't have to worry about picking the wrong stall speed either.
I'm pretty excited about it. Too bad it won't likely be until March or April until I get to really drive it again.
