Non F-bod question
HELP I have a Cavilier that I just replaced the front brakes on the tires have tread but are worn more in the middle. The first couple of weeks after changing the brakes the car drove great. Now when I turn right and left it sounds like a helicopter, no vibrations though. Checked the brakes and they are doing good, not sure whats going on. I thought it was the tires so I rotated them still sounds like a copter but not as bad, anyone else ever had a car do that? Any help is well appreciated!

Could you describe the sound a little better? Do you mean it sounds like a whap-whap-whap? Maybe something rubbing? Check the trim pieces and the plastic inside the wheel well. I had a piece come loose one time and rub the tire on sharp turns, kinda sounded like that. The only other thing I could think of would be CV joint, but that's more of a grinding sound.Dave M

whump whump whump and sometimes a roar its louder when I turn right than left, could it have anything to do with the tires? which I think where over inflated due to middle wear.Comment

I doubt it would be the tire unless there is physical damage to them. I would lean towards something rubbing, or possibly a suspension component that came loose.Dave M

How much am I looking at? Is it drivable with a bad CV joint? Can I do it easy or will I need to take it somewhere? Thanks for the help guys.Comment

you can drive it with a bad CV joint, but eventually the car will become immobile. It needs replaced soon. These days, for CV joints, usually the whole half-shaft is just replaced as a unit. It's a much labor to replace the joint as it is just to replace the axle as a unit, so most places just do that. I would confirm that it is the CV joint before jut replacing anything, though.Dave M

Most local car parts places will sell a rebuilt half shaft which includes the CV joints. A friend of mine bought one for a Dodge minivan for around $100. Bad CV joints will make the most racket if you turn the wheel all the way to one lock and hammer it.
Most of the time if a CV joint is bad, it is because the boots around the joint have torn and allowed crap to get in there. So if it makes noise when turning and the boots are torn... well that's a good place to look.
But... unevenly worn tires can howl (wumpa wumpa wumpa) like crazy. Particularly if the tires are worn in a way where the tread is high at the front of a block and sloping low towards the back. Feel them. If it's there try a front to back swap to see if that helps.
These two things you can check pretty easily and it will save you $50 for a shop to look at it.Comment

good news i think it was not the cv joint took it somewhere after replacing the tires and found that it was the bering (sp)Comment
