  • Signs of M6 going?

What are the signs of an M6 starting to go out on you? For the past 2 weeks I've been getting some weird problems with it. It doesnt matter what gear I'm in, everytime I punch it it revs instead of gripping. It did this on my A4 thats when I knew the clutches where starting to burn out, but why would it do it on an M6? My clutch is only a year old and only has less than 5k miles on it. The trans I got when I did my conversion had around 70k miles. Time for a rebuild? Why would my trans be slipping like that? I don't smell anything from the car (clutch).

I've never really heard of manuals slipping. The clutch will slip. I'm not trying to be a smart arse but are you sure you aren't riding the clutch? I'd doubt a clutch could be worn out in 5k miles but weirder things have happened.

I don't see how it could be a transmission problem. It sounds like a clutch problem.

Do you have the dreaded LT1 intake manifold oil leak? It could be leaking and getting oil on the clutch making it slip.

You can take the slave cylinder off the bell housing, Then take the casted metal piece that the slave cylinder goes through off, then take the metal plate off the front of the bell housing, then looking through the hole where the clutch fork is into the bell housing and look at the clutch. Make sure the bolts haven't backed out of the pressure plate.

When I first got my car the clutch would slip in the same conditions. It was the clutch, it was worn all the way down to the rivets on the disk. I had a friend in highschool who's clutch went after 2000 miles. Did you break it in properly? My new clutch has over 6000 miles now and is great.

I agree with everyone. There's nothing inside your M6 transmission that could slip. It is probably the cluch or (most likely) the pressure plate that has failed. I have bought a defective pressure plate that fails before it's time. Also, verify that there are no oil leaks that could contaminate the clutch and cause it to slip. Either case, it's time to drop the tranny and do the clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing and pilot bushing. Get the flywheel turned while you have it apart - that will also help the new clutch last longer.
