  • Driveshaft Replacement

Hey guys. I've got my motor about to come out of the car now and go to get rebuilt so I am trying to prepare for the other upgrades that I need to do to the car. One of them is the driveshaft. I am not so much replacing this because of the upgrade to the motor but because the stock steel one was unbalanced. I realized this when I switched to 3.73 gears.

So, what is a good replacement driveshaft capable of taking 500 fwhp?

I know the 1LE is available and also the LS1 driveshaft. There are also some aftermarket ones but I could problably pick up a 1LE or and LS1 DS from e-bay or somewhere else used.

    Any pros/cons to each? Opinions?

    Thanks

For light weight, a (very) few more HP to the rear wheels, an aluminum DS is a good replacement. Not sure if the LS1 or 1LE is the best choice for 500 flywheelHP. Maybe some of the LS1 guys/gals can tell us how high they have run them.

Lingenfelter sells a 3.5" aluminum DS that's good up to about 700-750HP. For steel - Denny's Nitrous Ready, Spohn Performance Heavy Duty. For steel, good for 1,000HP and maybe more, with a bit less weight than carbon steel, Mark Williams 3" chrome moly.

From personal experience, stay away from carbon fiber.... I turned an ACPT 3.8" heavy duty CF DS into a large, $700 soda straw with the car being driven with a "barely keeps it running" tune in the computer, between the engine shop and the body shop. Took me 3 months to convince ACPT that it really wasn't my fault, and to refund my money (not reimbursed for shipping two ways, nor for labor cost of removing it and replacing it with a Mark Williams DS).

Fred pointed out some good ones. There is also the Inland Empire (IE) aluminum DS and Strange also makes a nice chrome moly DS.
