  • Z28 2002 8K Mi - Want to trade mine in

    Guys,

    I need your help ASAP. I have a Z28 60,000 Mi I am looking to trade in for a Z28 8,000 Mi.

    My f-body is:
    2001 Z28
    60,000 Mi
    6SP
    Leather

    The dealerships f-body is
    2002 Z28
    8,000 Mi
    6SP
    Cloth
    T-Tops

I live in the Central Texas area. What should I get for my trade in? What should I pay for this car?
I am not looking to push the limits I just want a reasonable answer. Remeber this is a dealership
    I know I will take a hit.

    Thank you very much,

    Your fellow F-Body owner,

    Troy

KBB says the trade in on your car is about 11,000. In my experience dealers usually give below what the KBB trade in value is. The dealer will probably remind you how crappy the economy is and try to rip you off and offer 8500. Alot of people don't know any better and will simply say ok. The dealer will then turn around and sell your car to somebody for 12500 and make a nice little profit.

KBB says the retail on the 2002 should be 21000. That is way too high. They probably gave whoever traded in that car about 14000 - 15000. You could probably get them to sell you the car for about 16000 - 17,000. That all depends on the dealership. Some dealers just like to move cars and as long as they make a profit they are happy. Some dealerships aren't happy unless they rape somebody so they will try to get 18000 or even more for the car.

Cars are just about the worst investment you can make. You would definately be better off trying to sell your Z yourself. Or just be happy with the car you have. LS1s are pretty reliable and with proper maintenace I bet you could get another 100 thousand miles out of the car with only minimal repairs. That is if you don't race it all the time.

The used car market just sucks right now. Look at vette owners. To get a new Z06 out the door with TTL you are probably looking at least $53000. The second they take it off the lot the car is barely worth $40000 and that is selling the car to a private party.

Run the values with the NADA book online:

      http://www.nadaguide.com/Values/ZipC...Sec=1&wPg=1102

You should expect to get and pay these numbers. The dealer will try to low ball you, but bring the NADA book numbers, and stick to it. My fiancee did that wilh her old Mitsubishi when we traded it for a '98 Concorde. The book said it was worth $4,500; the dealer wanted to give us $2,500; and we said ...we will take $4,000, and pay the sale price on the Concorde, or we walk.

Little tip - never tell the dealer you have a trade until you have found his lowest price on the car you want to buy. Once you've haggled over the car then tell him you've decided to trade in, then start your haggling over the trade.
