What kind of power gains are expected when putting on exhaust cut outs? Or is it just kinda for sound? Curious because I'm considering putting them on. And where do you guys mount them.

My car feels like a dog with the cutout open, and kills my low end torque dramatically. Just noise to me don't care for it. (Worst mod I got.) I hate the clearance that I lose underneath the car. Does the Hypertech power tuning have any effect on performance loss from a cutout open?94 Formula LT1 (Aqua Metallic) - Auto. - 104,000 miles - Charcoal Leather Mods: Magnaflow Muffler, Lingenfelter CAI, MadZ28 Tune, 160F Hyp. My cut out is located right before muffler, i hate it so much, the low end torque is definatly not all there compared to when the cut out is closed, and it rattles everything. The whole center console just sounds like it is going to rattle apart. I will never get one again.1996 Trans Am:T-tops,graphite leather,16" chrome T/A rims, Nitto's, Descreened MAF, Morosso CAI, hypertech, flowtech cut out, 1LE elbow, Silver BMR tubular SFC's, 160 thermo, limo tint, harwood ws6 hood, !side molding, Stage 2 trans.

Great for when top end is important. Like highway runs ,the track,etc.. Also the underground parking (car alarms). Not good for everyday around town driving.

My friend john and I both have them on our cars. John has a 1995 z28 6 speed, with heads, cam, headers, roller rockers, reprogrammed computer, plus all of the free LT1 mods. At the track in Roswell (3700ft above sea level) There is about .5-.7 of a second difference between capped and un capped headers. Uncapped being faster.1999 Ram Air Trans Am. M6
SFC( not sure what kind), drilled/slotted rotors, K&N air filter, all free mods, 3" Borla cat back exaust, electric exaust cut out, NGK spark plugs, royal purple motor oil, and Zaino .Maybe more. I find more stuff done to it everytime I look at it.

IMHO cut outs sound like crap. No offense to anyone here who has them.If you want more power or a better sounding exhaust, then mod your car properly. Don't look for shortcuts. Do it right.

Is it possible the perceived "loss of low end torque" is simply the result of hearing a lot of noise and not having the car go anywhere, at least not in proportion to the noise? Without the cutout, the entire perception is different.... no noise but lots of response.
I agree with Kevin.... a cutout sounds crude. Just adding the Borla XR1 shorties to my exhaust took the raw edge off it, and I can't find any power loss from them. Still too loud, but then its not a street car anymore (unfortunately, lately its more of a "garage car").Fred

I have an electrical cutout at the back flange of the Borla where the plates with the holes normally go, and it is a great mod - kinda like the exhaust was made for it. It sounds great, but I normally keep it closed to make the car quieter, even though it's still too loud. I use it at the track almost exclusively, which isn't very often (but maybe in a couple weeks)
Anyway, I wouldn't even consider having cutouts at the head pipes or before the cat on a street car - I have heard these and they're horrendous. you would be sitting right over it and it would probably rattle you silly.

Another thing to keep in mind is what yuor local track requires in the way of noise reduction. Our local track (Englishtown NJ) requires mufflers and pipes that end at least past the rear edge of the door. They've even increased the requirement to "no collector mufflers, must be two chamber", so I don't even know if my Borlas will pass.
A couple years ago, SLP rented the track for their "Customer Appreciation Day", and the SLP LS1 demo car was banned from the track when they uncorked the cutouts.Fred
