  • Newbie with A motor question.

Hey guys. Right now Im in the process of V8'ing an S10. I found a motor, and had some questions you might be able to answer. The motor is a TPI out of an IROC. It is basically the long block, which is what I was wanting. I want to know if this is a 305 or a 350. I remember that the Z28 cars were all 305's, and If im not mistaken the IROC-Z's were all 350's so where does that leave the IROC motor? The car is long gone, so looking at the emissions sticker is out of the question, as is looking at the vin. I didnt look too long, but I think the valve covers were edge bolts, not center bolts. I dont know the year of the car. I am going to go pull the casting numbers off the motor sometime this week hopefully. Hell, for 100 bucks im not really gonna lose either way, but It would be nice to have the little more shit and get of a 350. Thanks for the help guys, even though dont have much info.

My friend has a 305 tpi iroc. So even if it was out of an iroc it still could be a 305.

I noticed your sig says you have a modded 305. What have you done to it? Whats the biggest cam I can run on a fuelie 305? Is it the same as a 350?

i am pretty much read up on it as much as one could be. My roommate is doing an extended cab 1st gen. Ive got a pretty clean start, I pulled the bed to clean up some surface rust, but other than that, shes ready for a new heart. I bought a 700 R4 Transmission with corvette internals, now all I am looking for is a decent tq converter and some bolt ons. I was going to go with a streetable cam, pulleys, rockers, a tb spacer (I am going to put a TBI intake manifold on and run TBI. I know that im not gonna push a lot of hp with it, but Im already fuel injected, and want to get this running a quickly as I can, its my only vehicle down here at school. (I have a 1994 454 suburban that I almost thought about pulling the motor out of and running in the s 10, but at 8mpg, its not really what Im needing.)

I already found a guy to burn chips for me. I think I still have the webpage, and If I remember right its like 80-90 bucks for a custom chip, not bad eh?

It is a fairly universal deal. I send him cam specs, and other mods, such as compression changes, bolt ons, etc. I know it sounds pretty stupid to step up from a v6 to a v8 and keep mileage, but I would like to knock down at least 18mpg with this motor. I do a lot of highway driving hence the 700 R4 and not a th350, so Mileage is a MUST! Cmon guys, Everyone here has built a 305, i think it was a requirement to grow up, at least where Im from. I always had carbd big block trucks to tune on, so what should I do to it?

tbi is a different deal, u might get a close tune but to get the best, u really need to datalog and burn ur own chips. i kno im gonna have to do that come spring if i get my motor in. oh and plan on using atleast a 350 tbi unit or best would be a 454 tbi unit
