  • Crankcase breather/filter question LT1

Ok, my neighbor gave me a brand new K&N Crankcase breather... however, I am wondering, should I even put this on my LT1?? I assume it goes where the oil filler is, but doesn't the PCV falve get rid of air pressure?? Why would anybody need a breather?

So, I guess my question is keep it or give it back?

    Thx,
    Bill

I'm guessing that it goes in place of your PVC system. It would mount on the valve cover. I honestly don't know if they work or not but I'd guess not because your PVC system uses vaccum to suck the exhuast out where the filter that sits on top of your valve cover does just that sits there.

There was an argument somewhere about it that went really in depth. I wish I could remember what website it was on. Basically everyone started saying that there are no gains by putting a breather in place of the pvc valve and that under heavy load it may in fact result in oil blowing out of the side of the engine through the breather. I think the guy that had that problem had an 800hp 427 though so........

Yeah I don't think my post helped any.

I've got an 800HP 381 and my stock PCV system works perfectly. IMHO, there is no purpose served by adding a breather. And you should find somewhere in previous posts how it "opens" a closed PCV system, and actually allows the engine to pull in air that hasn't been through the MAF sensor, in effect creating the equivalent of a small vacuum leak.

Some people resort to the breather when they start to find oil in the top of the throttle body, the result of excessive blowby causing the air supply line from the TB to the passenger valve cover to reverse flow to relieve the pressure buildup in the crancase from the blowby.

I used one on my car for about six months. I had an intermitent trouble code so I ditched it. I agree with Fred on this one...not really necessary. Modern cars don't benefit from some old-school mods. as much as people think.
