  • Ready to make the switch

Over to Mobil 1 from Quaker State Q, I remember seeing other posts saying there is a certain method to switching oils, can someone help me out? Thanks in advance

I've heard of a couple methods. First, Some will add two quarts of Mobil 1 and three of Quaker State. The next oil change, they will add three quarts of Mobil 1 and two of Quaker State... And so on.

The second method is sitting it up on jacks (or wherever you change your oil) overnight while letting it completely drain. Then, add a couple quarts of Mobil 1 and start up the motor. Let it run for a couple minutes, then shut it off and re-drain that oil. Mow you can add the Mobil 1.

I've never had to switch oil myself as I've always used Mobil 1, but these are two methods I've heard used, the latter being more expensive (you need to basically waste two quarts of Mobil 1). I don't really know if either method is necessary or not.

drain the old oil and add the new............ i see no reason for these "methods"... ive done it on several vehicles, no problems.

Never heard of those meatheds b4, you should be good to go with just a normal oil change.

Again, I've never had to do either as I use Mobil 1 from new. The previous owner of my T/A used Mobil 1 religiously (17K). Never really been an issue. Some people get a bit crazy and believe you shouldn't use synthetic oil until at least 50,000 miles. I could never get a straight explanation as to why, coincidentally.

It is what i have heard to,something to do with a break in period of the motor. Synthetic would not allow a proper break in,on a fresh rebuild.50,000 mls should be ok for syn oil

A lot of motors come from the factory with synthetic oil in them, so that argument doesn't make sense. I say just drain the old and add the new, like any oil change. And it's never too early to switch to Mobil 1.

Everyone talks about Mobil one being the best, but I was told from a local speed shop that the best synthetic oil out there is Ams-Oil. Has anyone ever heard this?

There's an individual who posts under the name "Patman" on CamaroZ28.com. He has extensive oil test data to back up his selection of a German-made Castrol full synthetic. One of the advantages, in addition to generating the lowest levels of trace metallic elements in the drained oil, is the fact that it measures more consistantly as a true 30-viscosity oil, while Mobil 1 generally falls slightly below (thinner than) a true 30-viscosity oil.

You might want to do a search for that screen name on CZ28.com. Makes interesting reading.
