Im looking to remove the radio but before I do. I wanted to know if there was a factory cover plate (1LE) Maybe? If not has anyone made a custom plate?
Thanks
Mine is home made, out of thin sheet aluminum, and painted with The Eastwood Company "graphite" vinyl paint. I also made some for a Camaro (although it is still "under assembly" in this shot):
Fred
381ci all-forged stroker - 10.8:1 - CNC LT4 heads/intake - CC solid roller - MoTeC engine management - 8 LS1 coils - 58mm TB - 78# injectors - 300-shot dry nitrous - TH400 - Gear Vendor O/D - Strange 12-bolt - 4.11's - AS&M headers - duals - Corbeau seat - AutoMeter gauges - roll bar - Spohn suspension - QA1 shocks - a few other odds 'n ends. 800HP/800lb-ft at the flywheel, on a 300-shot. 11.5 @ 117MPH straight motor
When I first did the plate, it was just a rectangle of very thin sheet aluminum, taped to the back of the plastic bezel/surround. I redid it later, making it out of a heavier sheet of aluminum that would support switches in the future, and adding small spacers at each radio support bolt location so the plate could be screwed to the dash, and not attached to the bezel.
Somewhere I still have the pattern I made for the plate. To fit correctly on the radio mount frame, and still be spaced correctly to be tight against the bezel, it needs to be an irregular shape, not a simple rectangle.
I will probably move my nitrous switches there, or add a fan switch or something else. The nitrous controls are currently in the door map pocket. A friend of mine bent the panel for me..... it's all about "attention to detail"

Excelent attention to detail... Looks like I will have to fab one up. I was sure some of the 1LE cars did not come with a radio. So I assumed their was a factory part # for a cover plate. thanks...
Have you guys seen Racedeck Flooring? They make a composite diamond plate look-alike modular flooring. They come in 12"x12" tiles. My neighbor just did his shop in this and it looks really cool. I thought it would be a cool idea to do a radio delete cover with one of these panels. They make them in graphite which looks to be pretty close to the dash color.
But, if your going for a factory-like look, I think Fred's cover looks good.
