Had the driveshaft off and noticed that the little strip of metal that connects either side of the U joint is broken loose. What is this piece, what does it do, and I assume I should fix it?

Same thing happened on mine.
I'm guessing that piece is there so that the end caps don't fall off while the drive shaft is off the car, or it's to "reinforce" it.
Every person' I talked to abotu mine said it's a useless piece.
I bought an aftermarket heavy duty u-joint and had it installed, which does not come with that little piece, so don't worry about it.
The real concern is if the end caps came off the u-joint, if so make sure all the bearings are in place.

Those little metal pieces are garbage.
The factory put them there so the end caps dont fall off during assembly. It could hurt to have one of those land on your head from 20 feet, and it would make a mess of little needle bearings all over the floor.Tracy
