  • MSD LT1 Cap & Rotor, how to install?

Just received MSD's New Cap & Rotor for the LT1 or Opti-spark distributor, what's the best way to install? Looks like I might have Two Options: remove the Balancer from underneath the car or remove the Water Pump.

Thought it would be a pretty straight forward job but after I looked under the hood, OUCH.

    Thanks,

So you actually received the part? It's good to know MSD is actually shipping these parts. You'll need to remove the crank pulley, rotate the hub to be in a Y configuration, remove the Water pump, remove the optispark unit to disassemble and replace the cap and rotor.

You will need an external Torx E4 bit to take the cap off the Opti. Its a hard bit to find.... Snap-On has them. If you can't find a bit, take one of the T15 Torx screws out of the top plate on the throttle body, wrap the threads in tape to protect them, and put them in a pair of vise grips. Use the screw as a socket to remove the tiny screws that hold the cap on.

Thanks Joe, but after reading your reply I might just keep the MSD Cap & Rotor in the box for now. Original Cap & Rotor only has 19k miles of use. Since I already installed an MSD Digital 6 Plus ignition box and MSD Coil I figured I'd toss the factory Cap & Rotor. Motor runs perfectly so I'm not going to take anything apart just yet, just hope the MSD Box doesn't fry the GM Cap & Rotor or Opti for that matter. Not my daily driver so I'm in no hurry.

I ordered the Unit in March and just received it yesterday.

There is something to be said for the old phrase:

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Joe, couldn't agree with ya more. Motor doesn't skip and revs freely to 6,500 so I think I'll just wait for the Opti to go, but should be fine for many years to come.

              Thanks,
