i forget how the smog thing works. i'm in california my car is 2001 but i bought it 2004, i hear that sog is every 2 years.
my q is , is my car has to be smog this year or next year ?
are they going by the year of production or by the time you bought it ?

They go by the time you bought it. If you smogged last year, you won't have to this year.

Ummmm, actually, that's not what I was told. Check your VIN. CA goes by the last digit. If its even, you smog on even years, odd on odd years. However, a "new" vehicle doesn't need to be smogged for the first 5 yrs. So, since you drive an 01, you're fine till 06. After that, you're gonna need to smog. They'll let you know when your registrationg needs to be renewed if you need to or not. Just make sure that when it does come time to smog, you check and see if you have to go to any smog station or a smog-only station. The difference is about $30-$40 more for a smog-only station...and you can't get out of it. But, for now, don't worry about it
